Your Essential Guide to Crete
Crete is one of the most stunning islands of Greece, and visiting it is a holiday that you’re sure to remember forever. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your visit and really turn your holiday into something special.
Accommodation
Where you stay is one of the most important decisions of your trip, and it’s worth spending a little more to make sure you get the best quality. Choosing one of many villas in Crete is a different but exciting way to give your visit a little extra kick – absorb yourself in the true, luxurious experience and invest in a villa you can really relax in after a long day of exploring. Plus, with many including a swimming pool, it’s never been easier to live the good life and rock your holiday in style. You can find accommodation here with Blue Villas – they are an award-winning agency dedicated to finding the best quality for you. They have consultants who will handpick choices from over 150 villas so that you can find exactly what you’re looking for, meaning the whole stay is personal to you.
Scenery
One of the main draws of the Greek islands is the breath-taking scenery – whether you’re looking for beaches that wrap the coastline, hidden coves, valleys that envelope villages lined with narrow cobbled streets, mountains that are sprinkled with snow, or rough cliffs that are soaked with frothy, splashing waves, in Crete you’ll find it all. Don’t forget to bring a camera – you’ll need it, as every moment is picture worthy, and you won’t want to forget a second. There are countless orchards, gardens and plateaus for you to get your fill of the local wildlife and plants, and see the true beauty of what grows in Crete.
Activities
Crete is full of ways for you to spend your time, whichever way you choose to spend your time – if scenery is your thing, take one of the many walking tours (some free) of the island to gain an insight into the history and culture of Crete, as well as get the opportunity to take in some of the most beautiful sights. Take time to explore your surroundings and decide which areas you’d like to see the most – the more you explore, the more hidden gems you’ll come across to make your trip even more special.
If you’re looking for a little bit of paradise, Rethymno is one of the most beautiful harbours in the world, and is the perfect place to explore and relax by the gently rippling sea. One of the most bustling parts of Crete is Hania, where you can venture down narrow lanes and explore old Venetian and Turkish architecture, as well as get a taste of the old town and its history.
If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, we recommend hiking the Samaria Gorge – this is Europe’s longest gorge, and gives you access to some of the most incredible views in the world, allowing you to get a glimpse of the raw, untouched beauty of Greece. You’ll even get to explore the abandoned village of Samaria – an experience like no other, and one you certainly don’t want to miss.
History and Culture
If you’re looking to learn a bit more about the history and culture of Crete, it’s not hard to find – there’s plenty to see! You’ll find ruins and remnants of societies been and gone, one of the most prominent being the Palace of Knossos, with plenty more fortresses and mansions scouring the island thanks to the variety of different invaders that have taken a fancy to Crete, along with mosques and Turkish bathhouses.
The villages in Crete are still untouched, particularly those hidden in valleys and mountains, and they give you a deep insight to life for locals on Crete as well as the chance to immerse yourself in the culture. There are lots of customs and traditions that many of the locals still enact with pride, from dances and instruments (the lyra is a popular instrument in Crete) to local festivals, which occur often and keep the place alive and colourful.
Food
Greek cuisine is one of the finest in the world, and is not to be missed if you visit, particularly in Crete. Since many of the villages are tucked away from mainstream tourism, this is where you’ll find the most authentic and delicious food. Many tavernas make their own food including cheese, olive oil, raki and wine, and often will raise their own meat and catch their own seafood, meaning you’re bound to get top-quality, homemade food straight from the locals. There are plenty of food trails and wine-tastings so you can expand your palette and really explore the world of Greek cuisine and what it’s all about.
Crete is an experience like no other, and with these tips, you’ll be able to make your holiday an extra special one that you’re certain to never forget. Have fun!
AIWAYS sets a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS
AIWAYS, the Shanghai-based personal mobility provider, has completed its epic 15,022-kilometer road trip from China to Western Europe – which set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title in the process. The ‘longest journey by an electric vehicle (prototype)’ record was achieved by the AIWAYS U5 Engineering Drive Team (China), driving an AIWAYS U5, starting in Xi’an, Shanxi, China and ending in Frankfurt, Germany, from 17 July 2019 to 7 September 2019.
During this mammoth 53-day drive, the pair of development cars passed through 12 countries, including China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Switzerland. They arrived in Frankfurt on 7 September, in time for the IAA 2019 motor show. Alexander Klose, Executive VP Overseas Operation at AIWAYS, comments: “This world record represents a monumental achievement for our engineers. They have developed a fully-electric SUV that’s capable of traveling hundreds of kilometers between charging in some of the most challenging terrain and remote areas. The fact that we’ve been able to achieve a world record in these conditions demonstrates the U5’s qualities, capabilities and, most importantly, its suitability for European consumers.”
AIWAYS Chief Technical Officer Winter Wang added: “This has been a drive of epic proportions, with the U5 tackling some of the best and worst road conditions that drivers might expect to come across in a lifetime of driving. It shows the high standard of development work that has gone into creating a car that is as suitable for driving in Shanghai as it is in Western Europe.”
The convoy started its journey by tackling the Chinese Gobi Desert and crossing the Kazakh Steppe, locations without an adequate electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The high energy demands of driving on Kazakhstan’s often poor road surfaces, and crossing the Southern Ural Mountains, also posed a challenge to engineers, who frequently relied on low-voltage power sources to recharge the prototype vehicles overnight. Engineers used this to successfully optimise the U5’s charging logic, ensuring compatibility with a variety of different charging standards and varying voltages.
The engineering team on the drive was also in frequent contact with the China-based R&D team, reporting back on multiple hardware and software features. These included the thermal management system underpinning the 65 kWh battery pack, as well as the electric motor, suspension components and dynamic characteristics. With the support of independent test provider TÜV Rheinland, the AIWAYS U5 has recently achieved European homologation in all product aspects ahead of going on sale in Europe next year. The U5 is a statement of intent for the AIWAYS brand as it aims to bring affordable, connected and premium electric transport to the European market in 2020.

Code of Rainbow: Legends of Azure and the Masked Planet
Q&A with Author Weiqi Wang on:
THE CONTINUED QUEST TO MAKE MAGIC AND SCIENCE COMPATIBLE WITH THIRD BOOK OF ACCLAIMED YOUNG ADULT SERIES
Question: How would you define this genre that you invented for Code of Rainbow and why is it important to differentiate this from your typical sci-fi series?
Weiqi Wang: This series is a pioneer to construct a magic world based on physical scientific theories. I call this potential new genre Sci-M-Fi, or SMF. This is the first attempt that I ever heard of, worldwide, that tries to bridge magic with realistic, physical science. My scientific background and understanding in scientific disciplines, including but not limited to the theory of time and space, origination of the universe and quantum physics are the keys to my world-building in this series. By the end of the series, readers will see how the magic in this world, although looking very similar to “traditional” magic concepts, can be explained by the underlying physical scientific theories from our real world. As such, this series will smoothly transform its genre from magic fantasy to sci-fi. That’s why I call it Sci-M-Fi.
Q: Did your scientific and philosophy background play a role in creating Sci-M-Fi?
WW: I’m a scientist and an engineer, plus I’d like to see myself as a philosopher, too. I couldn’t stop thinking about extreme philosophical questions since I was little, such as how the universe exists. So, my style is open-minded and borderless imagination, plus humor when it fits, and I’m brave enough to try to bridge magic with physical science. If we think about it, the concept of “magic” originated from the observation of something that we cannot explain, something deemed supernatural, which does not mean it’s not scientific. If I wasn’t a scientist and hadn’t been thinking critically about philosophical questions such as the origin of the universe, I wouldn’t be able to build the world in this series.
Q: Another big theme present throughout the series is the mistreatment of animals, or “magimals”. Why was this an important issue for you to highlight?
WW: Not everybody knows the epidemic of abuse and torture to animals, whether it’s for fun or for business. The fur coat business, as a typical example, sometimes demands live skin peeling to get fresh furs so that the coats can be sold at a higher price. Countless animals therefore suffered un-imaginable, appalling pain from live skin peeling, and I’ve seen many videos on that. It just drove me utterly mad, but it seems to me that very few people are aware of this and, surprisingly, many don’t care even after getting informed. It’s just so wrong. I want to raise awareness on that.
Q: What message do you hope to get across by showcasing these issues?
I want my readers, especially the younger ones, to be aware of this kind of issues and get educated in the right direction. Animals and humans are both lives. Treating them with love is one of the most basic and fundamental disciplines and deeds of goodness. We also need to protect environment and treasure all kinds of resources. Appreciate and maintain the era of peace as of now. This world doesn’t owe us peace; we need to maintain it by ourselves.
Q: So, do you think real magic is out there?
WW: I think people should be open-minded and embrace creative thinking when it comes to the concept of “magic.” It originates from describing un-explainable phenomena, which might be due to under-development of science. Magic and science may not be opposite to each other, they are just two concepts or philosophies. So, I would say to readers to try to be open about the idea of magic. Anything is possible.
WEIQI WANG’s goal as a writer is to connect the scientific world with elements of magic. He received his PhD from Oxford University before coming to live in the United States. As a Doctor of Philosophy, Wang also explores elements of existence and universe came to be in his books. Legends of Azure and the Masked Planet is the third book of the Code of Rainbow saga, with four more installments of the series planned. He currently resides in San Francisco. When We Dance The Music Dies
Moviegoers with a passion for psychological thrillers will welcome the return of “Fright Night” star William Ragsdale in director Anthony de Lioncourt’s new film, “When We Dance the Music Dies,” which takes moviegoers along on a riveting ride that will have them questioning the very nature of reality. Those film lovers are in for a special treat, if they also happen to share de Lioncourt’s nostalgic fondness for the 1980s horror classic, ”Fright Night!”
Watch the trailer on Vimeo here.
The new film features William Ragsdale, the star of that 1985 movie, in his return to the thriller genre that first brought him widespread fame. Eric Roberts also brings his intensity to this new film, following performances that have earned him three Golden Globe Award nominations (“King of the Gypsies,” “Star 80,” and “Runaway
Train”) and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor (“Runaway Train”) during his long and celebrated career. Rounding out the lead cast is Catherine Mary Stewart, who also developed a large and dedicated following thanks to her work in two 1980s films
that took moviegoers into the unknown – “The Last Starfighter” and “Night of the Comet.”
In writing the screenplay for “When We Dance the Music Dies,” Anthony de Lioncourt builds on the reality-distorting psychological themes that he featured in his two previous indie films, and he says he was inspired by a mysterious recent incident in the news that seemed to blur the line between reality and the supernatural. The story of the frantic search of a father [Tom Walton, portrayed by William Ragsdale] or his college-age daughter [Audrey Walton, portrayed by Theresa Moriarty], who vanishes under mysterious experiences – and the twists and turns of his journey leads him to
question his own sanity. The curious events portrayed in the film are inspired by a true story that captivated de Lioncourt – the odd circumstances surrounding the disappearance and tragic death of a young woman by the name of Elisa Lam.
As detectives worked to learn what had happened to the young woman, they found surveillance video of Ms. Lam acting bizarrely in an elevator in a Los Angeles hotel. When they saw that she had pressed every button in the elevator, in an apparently haphazard pattern,
investigators found that Ms. Lam and her friends were engaged in an activity known as “The Elevator Game” – an urban myth that originated in Asia and South Korea which promised those who played the game that they could “access an alternate dimension” by pressing
the buttons in an elevator in the “correct” sequence, and exiting on a particular floor. Ultimately, Ms. Lam’s body was found in the water tower atop that Los Angeles hotel, and the way that she met her demise is still unclear.
In “When We Dance the Music Dies,” the young woman’s father’s investigation leads him to an eccentric cult leader [Clayton Riggs, the cult leader, portrayed by Eric Roberts] who has persuaded the members of his group that they all originated from “another dimension,” and – through their leader – they could “return there.” Tom Walton’s desperation is shared by his wife Helen [portrayed by Catherine Mary Stewart] as his search takes one unexpected turn after another.
Filmgoers who give themselves to this psychological journey as the story unfolds, are in the hands of a master director who has long been fascinated by how a “tenuous grasp of reality” can be captured on film. Just as he was inspired by the strange disappearance of Elisa Lam, Anthony de Lioncourt is also intrigued by recent work in the scientific community that suggests there is “binary code” in the universe. (In other words, the “reality” we are experiencing may not be the “only” reality. Yes, we may soon be entering “The Matrix!”)
As those who have enjoyed de Lioncourt’s first two films — “The Protokon” (2015) and “Thorns for Flowers” (2016) – can attest, there is a “psychedelic side” to his work, as the director describes it. He says he is fascinated by the way our memories distort reality and the way the line between dreams and our waking state is always a bit blurred. Like iconic directors in the history of cinema
like Akira Kurosawa and Alain Resnais have explored in their classic films, the nature of reality is much more subjective than we might like to believe, and this is an important theme in “When We Dance the Music Dies.”
For this new film, de Lioncourt has “worn many hats” – not only as writer and director, but also as cinematographer and soundtrack composer. One major source of joy in being a filmmaker, he says, has been the opportunity to visualize communicate a character’s state of mind. “Because I direct and also do the cinematography,” he says, “I get to really set the mood and the tone and the atmosphere. I feel that’s really important, especially with this story, because it has its supernatural aspects as well as a strong dramatic tension.”
“When We Dance the Music Dies” also marks the third film that de Lioncourt has directed in partnership with Mark Mattson, who served as executive producer on this project. The duo began working together when Mattson served first as de Lioncourt’s model for some scary photos. When they began collaborating on their first feature-length film, “The Protokon” – Mattson was once again cast as the killer. Despite a tight budget, the warm reception to that film, and to their follow-up effort (also a psychological thriller), paved the way for their third film, the first one produced with a SAG cast and union sanctioned crew.
