Preventing Public Data Leaks

Protecting an individual’s identity from cyber thieves can be a monumental task, especially when thieves can gather information about someone by just using public data sources.

That’s why Rohit Chadha, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science in the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri, is working with researchers at the University of Illinois-Chicago and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on a $1.2 million grant over 4 years from the National Science Foundation to study how to help prevent privacy leaks when there is a large amount of data that can be gathered publicly.

“Differential privacy is a technique invented about fifteen years ago that ensures when someone asks questions of online databases — census data, consumer trends or aggregated information such as salary range or average number of children of people living in a certain area — the privacy of a person’s digital records remains intact,” Chadha said. “You still want to be able to grant access to these inquires because the data is important for businesses, researchers and governments. On the other hand, you also want to be able to protect an individual’s privacy.”

By asking enough valid questions of different databases, cyber thieves can build enough of a person’s profile that they can use that information in nefarious ways. Chadha said researchers have already begun testing different methods to thwart cyber thieves trying to attempt this.

“The research community has been aware of the possibility of these attacks for some time,” Chadha said.

Chadha, along with Aravinda Sistla of University of Illinois-Chicago and Mahesh Viswanathan of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and their teams will use the grant to verify the quality of the current methods being used and work to improve those methods as needed.

Binge Drinking May be More Damaging to Women

Alcohol consumption is a major cause of chronic liver disease in the United States, and binge drinking is emerging as a significant contributor to liver injury. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in six U.S. adults binge drink four times per month. In a recently published study examining the effects of binge drinking on rats, researchers from the University of Missouri School of Medicine discovered that female rats who were of equal age and weight to male rats were more sensitive to alcohol and experienced alcoholic liver injury at a higher rate than male rats.

“Some chronic drinkers can drink for several years and still live relatively healthy lives,” said Shivendra Shukla , PhD, Margaret Proctor Mulligan Professor of medical pharmacology and physiology at the University of Missouri School of Medicine . “But many chronic drinkers are susceptible to liver damage when they binge drink. The liver is the metabolic powerhouse of the body and liver injury can compound damage to other organs. We studied the similarities and differences of gender-specific responses to repeat binge drinking. Our research showed just three binge drinking episodes triggered a response for more injury in the female rats.”

Shukla found a statistically significant difference using just four male and four female rats, giving them the same amount of alcohol three times at 12-hour intervals. He collected and analyzed blood and liver tissues four hours after the last binge episode. Shukla discovered the blood alcohol concentration was twice that in the female rats, but not all damage in males and females reflected that ratio. He discovered the female rats had nearly 4 times as much fatty build-up in the liver, a trigger for additional inflammation and damage.

“There’s a protein called diacylglycerol kinase-alpha (DGKa) that has been shown in other studies to promote tumor growth and cancer,” Shukla said. “In our findings, this protein goes up 20% in male rats, but increases 95% in females. However, any role this protein plays in alcohol-induced breast cancer is unknown and remains to be investigated in the future.”

Shukla says additional studies in humans will be needed to further understand the potential differences in how binge drinking affects males and females, and the metabolic causes for these differences. “Unfortunately, alcohol has been glamorized,” Shukla said. “It is dangerous. Don’t binge drink. The research is very clear.”

In addition to Shukla, the study authors include Ricardo Restrepo, PhD, Annayya Aroor, PhD, Robert Lim, PhD, Ronald Korthuis, PhD, and Xuanyou Liu, graduate student from the Department of Medical Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of Missouri School of Medicine; and David Ford, PhD, and Jacob Frank, graduate student, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Center for Cardiovascular Research at Saint Louis University.

The study, “Binge alcohol is more injurious to liver in female than male rats: histopathological, pharmacological, and epigenetic profiles,” was recently published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. The authors of the study declare that they have no conflicts of interest.

Choir! Choir! Choir! Unite Singers at U.S.–Mexico Border

Choir! Choir! Choir!, led by Canadian artists Nobu Adilman and Daveed Goldman, forms impromptu choirs of strangers to learn songs and perform a concert together. The duo takes a non-traditional approach; there are no auditions, and the audience is the choir. “Choir! Choir! Choir! has fashioned a profound way for people to connect and interact” (New Yorker) and their ArtPower at UC San Diego performance on Sunday, October 13, at 3 p.m. will unite singers from both sides of the US–Mexico border to sing and celebrate the unique friendship, culture, and community we share in the border region of San Diego and Tijuana. There are few places on earth so scenic where you can gather people from two countries at once to create beautiful music together and share in how special it is to be in this particular place in the world.

While we will be divided by the physical border, music knows no boundaries and our voices together will transcend barriers. “When you sing with others, you become bonded in ways that strengthen yourself and expand your sense of community. The opportunity to experience this with the people of San Diego and Tijuana, across borders and languages, is very exciting. We can’t wait!” says Nobu Adilman of Choir! Choir! Choir! Leveraging music as a global language that everyone can connect to, Choir! Choir! Choir!, along with ArtPower, looks deeper at how communities collaborate and interact.

“The event shows that the arts can overcome obstacles that separates us and resonate with the harmonies which connect us all,” added ArtPower Executive Director Jordan Peimer. Founded in 2011, Choir! Choir! Choir! has amassed a dedicated and passionate community of singers and a thriving international fan base on YouTube. The group has performed with renowned artists such as Patti Smith, Tegan and Sara, David Byrne, Rick Astley, and Rufus Wainwright, and onstage at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall with the likes of Debbie Harry and The Flaming Lips.

Choir! Choir! Choir! exists to celebrate music and push the boundaries between practice and  performance, artist and audience, offering therapeutic benefits with the ultimate side effect: a powerful community. This concert is an ArtPower Special Event. This event is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is encouraged and can be reserved through Eventbrite. More information can be found at here.

Folds Galway into 2020 Itineraries

Honoring Europe’s Capital of Culture

Ireland’s Galway in February will become even more globally prominent. This city has been dubbed the 2020 European Capital of Culture.

An award-winning tour operator, Vagabond Small Group Tours of Ireland, is already preparing to fold Galway into as many of its 2020 tours as possible. This company will also offer opportunities for guests to sample a variety of world-class events that make travel to Ireland in 2020 a must.

The national event lineup for next year includes but is not limited to:

• April 2020: The 50th anniversary of the World Irish Dancing Championships in Dublin

• June 15, 19, 26, 2020: European Soccer Championships 2020 Group Stage Matches at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.  The senior men’s soccer tournament games (UEFA European Championships) are being held for the first time in Dublin.

Following is the result of their research, a perfect mix of hidden gems, historical events, challenging hikes and stunning destinations that create the ultimate Ireland bucket list of amazing things to do on the Emerald Isle in 2020 and beyond.

• Visiting Skellig Michael, an island with puffins, 600 steep stone steps and a 6th century monastic settlement that was featured in Star Wars The Last Jedi (Episode VIII).

• Biking two brand-new greenways opening in 2020. One, a section of the Royal Canal Greenway, will be Ireland’s longest dedicated cycle path, leading from the outskirts of Dublin to Longford in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. When it launches in the second half of 2020, the Carlingford Lough Greenway will be Ireland’s first cross-border cycle trail, linking Newry in Northern Ireland to Louth in the Republic.

• Booking a Black Cab Tour to explore the history of Belfast that is contested by two tribes that are Catholic and Protestant, Republican and Unionist, Green and Orange.

• Downing a quaff in a hardware store.

• Watching a hurling match, the world’s fastest field sport.

• Partaking of Listowel Writers Week in quiet north Kerry May 27-31, 2020.

Vagabond’s 12 Day Giant Irish Adventure and the 11 Day Driftwood Discover Ireland itineraries embrace most of these experiences. All of the company’s tours begin in and end in Dublin. Guests are encouraged to schedule in optional Dublin events as they arrive or depart the city.

The 12 Day Giant Irish Adventure Tour is a two-time winner of Best Adventure Experience at the Irish Tourism Industry Awards in 2017 and 2015. To mark this historic milestone, JEEZY will host the JEEZY Unplugged -TM 104 All White Concert in Atlanta at the Coca-Cola Roxy. Thusfar, Jeezy has dropped two scorching tacks from the album, “1 Time” and “MLK BLVD” feat. Meek Mill. Today, Jeezy announces the star-studded tracklist to the final installment of the legendary series, featuring guest spots from John Legend, CeeLo Green, Rick Ross, Gunna and many more.

“We’re graduating together,” JEEZY told Billboard this week in an expansive, wide-ranging exclusive interview.  “We got through a whole series. This isn’t about me, it’s about speaking for those that are oppressed and demonized that they can’t speak for themselves and they can’t fight for themselves. I just feel like this is their album. This is their talk and I feel like it’s a celebration… it’s like the kid that graduated from high school last year. Now it’s a nice time for the real world. Now it’s time for the real goal — the real accolades. You already put in the work and you pass with flying colors. So this is the celebration.”

Over the course of his legendary career, JEEZY has sold over 11 million albums worldwide, accumulated over 5 billion global streams, and has had multiple chart-topping hits.  2020 will mark the 15th anniversary of his seminal debut album via Def Jam, the multi-platinum Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101, which entered the Rap and R&B charts at #1 (#2 on the overall), and pioneered the trap music genre with the double-platinum #1 hit “Soul Survivor” featuring Akon.

Recent entrepreneurial business ventures for JEEZY include his fitness water Defiance Fuel; his partnership in the Atlanta location of American Cut Steakhouse; and his ongoing incentivized partnership with Tequila Avion. Additionally, last month JEEZY announced a new partnership with Figgers Wireless to bring high quality technology to market at a more attainable price. The first products released under this new partnership were the F3 cellular phone and the F-Buds ear pods.
