Stress Awareness Month: Alleviating Stress and Working Out

Natalie Durand-Bush, PhD, CMPC

Association for Applied Sport Psychology Executive Board Member

Full Professor, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Canada

Co-Founder, Canadian Centre for Mental Health, Ottawa, Canada

Recovery plays a vital role in sport. It is necessary to prevent underperformance, overtraining, burnout, injuries, and illness. This is mainly due to the fact that athletes are subjected to ongoing physical and mental stressors while training in order to stretch their performance limits. However, it is important to balance such stressors with appropriate rest and recovery through the use of periodized approaches. Periodization programs are designed and implemented in sport to maximize the effects of physical and mental training over predetermined training cycles by varying key training variables such as volume and intensity.

The aim of these programs is to maximize long-term athlete development and peak performance during targeted competitions within identified periods or ‘mesocycles’ (e.g., hockey season, Olympic quadrennial). Each mesocycle consists of preparatory (e.g., off-season and pre-competitive season), competitive (e.g., regular competitive season), peaking (e.g., playoffs, national championship), and recovery (e.g., post-competition period prior to off-season training) periods or ‘microcycles’ that vary in length based on training objectives, athletes’ needs, and the amount of time available between peaking events. Issues often arise when periodization protocols are mismanaged and training responses are not properly monitored. For example, peaking may not occur if athletes do not respect built-in recovery activities (e.g., days off, sleep routine, naps, limited social media) as a result of fearing they will fall behind their competitors. Also, coaches who insufficiently pay attention to warning signs during high-intensity periods in which athletes require more time to physically and mentally recover can jeopardize athletes’ performance and health. The costs of poor or failed monitoring could be injury or illness, including low mental health and the onset of mental illness.

Athletes’ mental health reflects their psychological, emotional, and social well-being. Athletes who are mentally healthy are able to feel, think, and act in ways allowing them to work productively, reach their full potential and goals, enjoy life, contribute to their community, and cope with normal daily stressors. When stressors (e.g., physical, psychological) exceed athletes’ internal (e.g., resilience strategies) and external (e.g., parental and coaching support) coping resources, it can deplete them and lead to significant distress and impaired functioning. In other words, it can exacerbate an existing mental illness or trigger a new one. Symptoms to which coaches should pay attention when working with athletes include any significant changes in eating and sleeping patterns, isolation from others, unusual low energy/stamina, intense mood swings, decreased enjoyment and concentration, feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness, inexplicable pain, and difficulties performing daily tasks, to name a few. Coaches noticing such changes in athletes should intervene, particularly if these changes last more than two weeks.

This entails having a private, respectful, and empathetic conversation with struggling athletes by (a) asking them specific questions regarding observed changes (e.g., “I have noticed that you look more tired and withdrawn than usual, are you struggling at the moment?”), (b) offering support (e.g., “Your mental health is important to me, what can I do to help you recover and regain your strength?”), and (c) referring them to an appropriate mental health care provider if necessary (e.g., “I’m not a mental health expert but I am seeing signs that concern me; our team has access to a mental health practitioner and I’d like you to see this person to make sure you have the resources you need to cope and get back to your normal self”). Given the crucial role of rest and recovery in the management of both athletic performance and mental health, coaches should discuss with any struggling athletes the benefits of adding recovery periods in their training program or of taking a complete break to prioritize and help them restore their mental health.

LifeScale: How to Live a More Creative, Productive, and Happy Life

The book is a solution to the crisis for everyone – men, women, parents, and children — dealing with digital distraction which aims to solve the effects of digital addiction by helping us rebuild the strength to focus, learn and grow through each chapter. One of the original oracles of Silicon Valley, Brian is a world-renowned keynote speaker and has consulted for Fortune 500 companies, helped launch hundreds of start-ups and advised celebrity entrepreneurs from Shaquille O’Neal to Ashton Kutcher to Oprah!

Did you know…

The constant stimulation of tech is rewiring our brains, altering body chemistry and affecting our productivity, health, and wellness?

  • Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and other popular apps/games were deliberately designed to change our behaviors (it’s called persuasive design).
  • On average it takes 23 minutes to regain focus every time you pull away from a project to check your phone or twitter feed.
  • 36% of Millennials and Gen Z employees say they spend two hours or more checking their smartphones for personal activities during the workday.
  • Digital distractions cost the U.S. economy $997 billion a year in lost productivity.
  • Multitasking, the way most Americans “get things done,” actually reduces productivity by 40% and lowers IQ scores.
  • Social Media is damaging our teens. The more time they spend on social media, the more likely they are to be depressed, suffer low self-esteem and compare themselves negatively to their peers. 50+% prefer texting to talking!

This list goes on…

Today, most people are living with persistent distraction because it’s just a fact of life now. But, like cigarettes, which were originally endorsed by doctors, many of the devices and social networks we use were designed to be addictive. It’s time for a holistic approach to putting digital distractions in their place.

More than an Author, A Digital Distraction Survivor…

Brian is a bit of a Silicon Valley legend who helped advise more than 1,000 startups as well as researching technology’s evolving effects on markets and behaviors. He’s not coming at this topic as an expert in self-help. He’s an admitted victim who confronted his own loss of focus and productivity before writing this book.

In LifeScale, Brian shares:

  • The straight dope on how the tech industry got us addicted and keeps us addicted to Facebook, gaming and more.
  • His own challenges with distraction and ineffective multitasking and explores his journey to find short-term hacks and then long-term solutions to solve this problem.
  • Maps out a plan all of us can use to regain focus and creativity while learning to use Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, emails and all those apps on our smartphones as tools that enhance our lives instead of dominating them.

Taste the Roads Less Traveled in California’s Wine Country this Summer

California is home to dozens of distinct wine regions, including some of the world’s most famous destinations. But hidden among even the high-profile appellations are the wine roads less traveled, featuring stunning rural scenery, delicious wines and, often, fewer visitors. To help wine lovers discover new wine roads and wineries this summer, Wine Institute’s California Wine Country Back Roads series highlights off-the-beaten-path wine roads and regions. The five-part series begins with the back roads of California’s North Coast.

SONOMA COUNTY

Home to nearly 500 wineries, plus green valleys, rolling hills, regal redwoods and 55 miles of spectacular coastline, Sonoma County is one of the most well-known wine regions in California. Even so, there’s always something new to explore along Sonoma’s rural roads.

TASTE: The region is best known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but Sonoma’s diversity of climate and soils allows vintners to grow dozens of other varieties as well. You’ll find a more relaxed pace in the Alexander Valley where winding country roads lead to some of the county’s most delicious Cabernet Sauvignon wines, known for their elegant style. As one of Sonoma’s larger appellations in terms of vineyard acres, Alexander Valley’s back roads include more than two dozen wineries. Hidden treasures can also be found in the nearby Dry Creek Valley and Russian River Valley.

TOUR: On June 22-23, Experience Alexander Valley invites small groups of 20 or less to experience everything from blending seminars with winemakers to ravioli-making workshops to bocce in the vineyards. Also on June 8 – July 14 is the Art of Wine with a Vintage Palette at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts, featuring 60 artists celebrating the wine country culture of the North Bay. The free opening reception is June 8.

For more information on lodging, dining and upcoming events, see Sonoma Tourism.

NAPA VALLEY

A small region with a deservedly large reputation, the Napa Valley is known the world over for its acclaimed wines—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and other Bordeaux varieties—and a thriving culinary scene that includes Michelin star restaurants, delicious food truck fare and every level of cuisine in between.

TASTE: Bordered by two mountain ranges—the Vaca on the east and the Mayacamas on the west—the Napa Valley is rich with less-traveled mountain roads that invite visitors to meander and discover. Spring Mountain Road, just a few minutes off busy highway 29, is a rural respite of family owned and operated wineries, along with 1,000 acres of gorgeous hillside vineyards. Likewise, Mount Veeder, Atlas Peak, Howell Mountain and Diamond Mountainreward travelers with mountain vistas and limited-production wines. (Due to their remote locations, some wineries require advance appointments.)

TOUR: Festival Napa Valley is in July, featuring performers SEAL, Patti Lupone, jazz artists the Yellow Jackets, and a full slate of the finest concerts, operas, and fabulous winery parties. Free outdoor concerts will be at the St. Helena Concert Series, held on alternating Thursdays, June-August, in Lyman Park. Wind down the summer season at the Calistoga Harvest Table on Sept. 8, where local restaurants and 40-plus wineries team up to produce an epic feast laid out on 1,000 feet of tables in the center of Calistoga’s picturesque downtown.

For more information on lodging, dining and upcoming events, see Visit Napa Valley.

MENDOCINO COUNTY

Fifty miles north of Healdsburg lies ruggedly beautiful Mendocino County, home to towering redwoods and a foggy coast. More than 90 percent of the land is wild and undeveloped, and the region is known for its small-town vibe and relaxed hospitality.

TASTE: Drive along Highway 128 in the Anderson Valley and find more than two dozen small wineries producing everything from crisp sparkling wines to gorgeous cool-climate Pinot Noir to aromatic whites. The region’s producers are proudly “green,” with a high percentage of wineries using sustainable, organic or Biodynamic methods.

TOUR: Celebrate Father’s Day weekend June 15-16 with A Taste of Redwood Valley, a chance to sample library wines, small-production lots and even spirits. Anderson Valley wineries host their Barrel Tasting Weekend July 20-21, featuring previews of new wines and tastes of current releases.

For more information on lodging, dining and upcoming events, see Visit Mendocino.

LAKE COUNTY

Bordering Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino counties, Lake County was named for the region’s many picturesque lakes. Vineyards are planted throughout the county, from the agriculturally rich valley at 1,370 feet elevation to the rocky red soil around Mt. Konocti—a dormant volcano—at elevations above 2,000 feet.

TASTE: Home to more than 30 wineries, Lake County is known for its high-elevation Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc wines. Mini-tours around Clear Lake include Upper Lake and Lakeport, Nice and Clearlake Oaks, Lower Lake, Middletown, and the volcanic slopes of the Red Hills American Viticultural Area.

TOUR: On June 16, the Lake County Beer, Wine & Swine Baconfest brings together dad-friendly favorites for Father’s Day. Red, White, & Blues celebrates the best of Lake County wines on July 6 at Langtry Estate Vineyards in Middletown.

For more information on lodging, dining and upcoming events, see Lake County Wineries.

Paranormal Investigators Help Louisiana Police Chief Solve Town’s Hauntings

Morgan City, Louisiana, is experiencing an especially troubling spike of unusual emergency calls – unexplained encounters with the ghosts of the bayou city’s turbulent past that are frightening its citizens. In the all-new Travel Channel series, “Ghosts of Morgan City,” premiering on Friday, June 21 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, Police Chief James “Bo” Blair is now looking to his colleague from another jurisdiction for assistance.

Chief Blair learns that paranormal activity in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, has quieted down since that town’s police chief, Mike King, worked with a specialty team to solve a rash of hauntings last year. In search of advice, Chief Blair contacts Chief King, eventually following his lead and recruiting local paranormal investigator Jereme Leonard, who teams up with former FBI agent Ben Hansen and psychic medium Sarah Lemos to look into the incidents. In each of the eight one-hour episodes, the paranormal team attempts to figure out what’s causing the recent uptick of bizarre activity by looking for patterns and clues in the new cases they investigate (also check out how do spirit boxes work for ghost hunting).

With help from local historian Diane Wiltz, the team digs up the disturbing history associated with the area and begins crossing-over some of the restless spirits wreaking havoc on the small community. When they learn from Morgan City Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi that the hauntings have spread throughout the parish, the team begins working with the police departments of Patterson, Berwick and Franklin to uncover the truth behind the ghostly infestation of St. Mary Parish.

“We knew we had a whole new series when we heard about all the unnerving hauntings in the bayou,” said Matthew Butler, general manager, Travel Channel. “Morgan City and surrounding St. Mary Parish are filled with rich history, deep-rooted superstitions and larger-than-life characters, and it’s all set against the beautiful, yet eerie backdrop of Cajun Country.”

In the premiere episode, Jereme Leonard, Ben Hansen and Sarah Lemos receive an emergency call from the Morgan City Police Department about a shapeshifting mist in the area. The puzzling details take on new meaning when they discover the mist has ties to the first female executed in Louisiana. As the case wraps up, the team receives more distressing calls from law enforcement outside Morgan City, sending them to every corner of the parish, looking for answers. From a plantation with a history of voodoo and a violent Civil War battle to a family home haunted by the spirit of a young girl to the team’s own headquarters within the city’s historic archives, each clue brings the group one step closer to ending a haunted tug of war.

Actress Jackie R Jacobson

Jackie R Jacobson is one of the fastest rising young actresses with an impressive slate on the horizon. Justifiably angry with this realization, Dylan is determined for her valley pod to succeed.  “Malibu Rescue” the movie premiered May 13th and the series is set to premiere June 3, 2019 on Netflix!

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jackie knew she wanted to be an actress at a young age. Jennifer Truesdale

Boston based singer-songwriter Jennifer Truesdale returns to center stage with her new CD “Through The Circle”. Written and arranged by Jennifer and co-produced with David Minehan at Boston’s famed Woolly Mammoth Sound, Through The Circle is “a masterpiece of soulful and bluesy storytelling that embraces each listener into the thoughtful lyrics and brings them along on a feel-good journey.”

Moving seamlessly from blues, to soulful R&B, to jazz and gospel inspired melodies, Through The Circle speaks of love, loss, longing, laughter and the beautiful journey that is life. The first single, “I Need You Tonight”, is a sassy blues romp that is garnering attention from radio and press alike. From her belting vocals to the jazz-laden horns that support them, the truly bluesy lyrics make for a fine juxtaposition in a story of lingering love from a songwriters perspective – “I said I wouldn’t be lonely if you said goodbye // Looked out the window, watched you walk away, told myself I wasn’t gonna cry // I sat down to write a symphony but it didn’t turn out right // And oh I just need you, I need you tonight”. Other powerful tunes include the gospel inspired “We Will Not Be Forgotten”, sure to be the new anthem for 2019 with inspiring and empowering lyrics that will have you singing them over and over again.

Jennifer is joined on the album by an incredible cast of Boston A-list musicians, many faculty members and alumni of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music and the Boston Symphony Orchestra including: Joe Musella, Marty Ballou, Bill D’Agostino, John Mulroy, Tom West, Hiro Tokushige, Ririka Tokushige, Angel Subero, Joe Santerre, John Grant, Lydia Harrell and Kit Holiday.

“Jennifer Truesdale reflects true artistry on “Through The Circle”….a towering vocal talent…Influences from Billie Holiday to Etta James come to mind..” – Billy Copeland Music News

In addition to 8 original songs, Through The Circle contains stunning arrangements of the John Fogerty classic “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” and Stephen Stills’ “Love The One You’re With”. Showcasing a powerhouse rhythm section, stellar horn section and soaring vocal arrangements.

Opportunity for Entertainment Professionals

Great entertainment requires authentic stories and genuine representation of all people. This includes diverse people with physical, cognitive, sensory, mental health and other disabilities. Hence, RespectAbility, the nonprofit that produced The Hollywood Disability Inclusion Toolkit, is thrilled to offer an innovative lab series for emerging entertainment talent, as well as a track for mid-level career professionals. This 5-week, nine-session summer lab program is for people with disabilities and/or strong disability connections interested in development, production, and post-production, including careers as writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, animators, and other production roles.

“What we see on screen influences how we act in real life, but that is dependent on filmmakers choosing to include individuals with disabilities in diverse and accurate portrayals, which then helps remove the stigmas that currently exist about interacting with individuals with disabilities,” said Program Director Lauren Appelbaum, who leads RespectAbility’s Hollywood Inclusion efforts as the organization’s vice president, communications. “One purpose of this program is to continue building the talent pipeline of young professionals with disabilities looking to work behind the scenes. We do not want anyone to have an excuse that they could not find a writer, editor or any other position with a disability.”

Several sessions will meet at various studios where program participants will have the opportunity to learn about possible career paths and have networking opportunities. Furthermore, entertainment professionals in positions of power to hire will meet a group of qualified individuals and potentially shift their mindsets in equity goals for hiring. After all, opening the inclusion umbrella is the right thing to do as well as economically smart given that the disability market is valued at more than $1 trillion. According to Nielsen Research, Americans with disabilities represent the third largest market behind Baby Boomers and the mature market.

The remaining sessions will meet at RespectAbility’s partner locations around the city. Each lab session will include guest speakers and leaders in the industry, including from Bunim/Murray Productions, GLAAD, LeVar Burton Media, Producers Guild of America, Sundance Institute, Writers Guild of America West and more.

Faculty Advisors, who have been helping to develop the curriculum as well as in recruiting and evaluating participants, include: Karim Ahmad (Director, Outreach & Inclusion, Sundance Institute), Deborah Calla(Chair, Diversity Committee, Producers Guild of America; Media Access Awards), Elaine Hall (Founder, The Miracle Project), Diana Elizabeth Jordan (Actor/Director/Producer, Performing Arts Studio West), Sue Obeidi (Director, Hollywood Bureau, Muslim Public Affairs Council), Jonathan Murray (Founder and Executive Consultant, Bunim-Murray), David Renaud (Writer, The Good Doctor), Donna Walton (Founder, The Divas With Disabilities Project), Delbert Whetter (Chief Operating Officer & Head of Business Affairs, Exodus Film Group), and Gail Williamson (Talent Agent, KMR Diversity Department). In addition, Tatiana Lee, an actress, model and social influencer who is a wheelchair user with Spina bifida, will be assisting with this program.

RespectAbility’s President Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi added, “Entertainment contributes to our values and ideals. With just 2.1 percent of scripted television characters having disabilities, compared to 25 percent of American adults having a disability, we will continue to work with entertainment leaders to promote positive, accurate, diverse and inclusive media portrayals on TV and in film.”

This program is made possible with support by Comcast NBCUniversalJonathan Murray, and The Walt Disney Company.
