Conservation Education Efforts at the Scuba Show

As the largest consumer scuba expo of its kind in the United States, attendees to the annual Scuba Show expect to learn about scuba: the gear, the techniques, and where to do it. An equally important facet of the show is its emphasis on protecting the environment where scuba is possible – the oceans. Climate change and external factors are affecting the world’s oceans, and individual responsibility and education on what humans can do to mitigate the damage is important. This year, Scuba Show’s much anticipated Saturday night party for attendees and vendors will feature a silent auction and raffle benefitting Plastic Pollution Coalition. Scuba Show is doing its part to create access to that education through participating non-profits and seminars as part of its 2019 program.

Plastic is a major, man-made blight on the global ecosystem – this has been an increasingly common topic of discussion in public discourse over the last few years. But what impact does plastic actually have on the earth, and all of its inhabitants? Here’s a break-down on that topic, from the
 Plastic Pollution Coalition website:

  • Plastic never goes away – Plastic is a durable material made to last forever, yet 33 percent of it is used once and then discarded. Plastic cannot biodegrade; it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces.
  • Plastic piles up in the environment – Americans alone discard more than 30 million tons of plastic a year; only 8 percent of it gets recycled. The rest ends up in landfills or becomes ‘litter’, and a small portion is incinerated.
  • Plastic spoils our groundwater – There are tens of thousands of landfills across the globe. Buried beneath each one of them, plastic leachate full of toxic chemicals is seeping into groundwater and flowing downstream into lakes and rivers.
  • Plastic poisons our food chain – Even plankton, the tiniest creatures in our oceans, are eating microplastics and absorbing their toxins. The substance displaces nutritive algae that creatures up the food chain require.
  • Plastic attracts other pollutants – Manufacturers’ additives in plastics, like flame retardants, BPAs and PVCs, can leach their own toxins. These oily poisons repel water and stick to petroleum-based objects like plastic debris.
  • Plastic affects human health – Chemicals leached by plastics are in the blood and tissue of nearly all of us. Exposure to them is linked to cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption and other ailments.
  • Plastic threatens wildlife – Entanglement, ingestion and habitat disruption all result from plastic ending up in the spaces where animals live. In our oceans alone, plastic debris outweighs zooplankton by a ratio of 36-to-1.
  • Plastic costs billions to abate – Everything suffers: tourism, recreation, business, the health of humans, animals, fish and birds—because of plastic pollution. The financial damage continuously being inflicted is inestimable.

This isn’t all doomsday, however – for those interested in expanding their knowledge on a variety of subjects including doing one’s part to fight back against the plastic plague, the Scuba Show will feature dozens of seminars, clinics, workshops and classes. These optional activities focus on various specialized, educational and entertaining topics such as foreign travel, history, underwater photography, local dive spots, diving physiology, weather forecasting, and of course, marine conservation.

Environmental seminars include:

  • “Ocean Plastic Pollution Solutions” with Dianna Cohen and Sandra Curtis (Seaside 1, 5/4, 2-3 PM): Global attention on Plastic Pollution has hit mainstream news outlets in a big way this past year, but the problem has been accelerating for over 20 years.  While education remains critically important, we will focus on solutions that are being tested and implemented right now, addressing upstream solutions and source points as we live on an ocean planet and its downstream from everywhere.
  • “Receding the Plastic Tide” with Brittany Novick (Seaside 1, 5/5, 12-1 PM): We’ve all heard it before, plastics are an issue, humans are to blame for the destruction of the oceans and we need to change our ways before it’s too late. While everyone wants to tell you to produce less waste and to change your ways, it is sometimes difficult to know where to start. An overwhelming problem that people want to help solve but no one knows where to really begin. This talk is to give divers the tools to start decreasing their impact on the planet, including one of their favorite places on earth – our oceans.
  • “The Ocean is for Everyone” with Jaclyn Friedlander (Seaside 7, 5/5, 1-2 PM): Bring the kiddos as this session was specifically designed for ages 5-12. And their parents of course. Children will be introduced to pre-scuba diving activities they can participate in until they are old enough to get certified and they will be encouraged to love the ocean and marine environments. Jaclyn will show you ways to work together as a family to participate in conservation efforts!

No matter what level of experience, divers of all walks of life can find something new to love about diving and the oceans at Scuba Show’s seminars, and will walk away safe, more responsible divers ready to take on the oceans without leaving behind a negative mark. The entire seminar schedule can be found here.

But that isn’t all. Even without individual seminar tickets, attendees will have access to a plethora of non-profits at the show to engage with and learn from. Participating nonprofits include:

“Southern California is home to one of the strongest markets of scuba divers in North America,” said
Scuba Show producer, Mark Young. “It always pleasure to see this very special and very passionate community of divers come together every year to share their experiences, knowledge and passion.”

The
2019 Scuba Show will take place on Saturday, May 4, from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday, May 5, from 10 AM to 5 PM at the Long Beach Convention Center, located at 300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90802. Tickets are available online at scubashow.com/tickets. Full price tickets will also be sold at the door. Single day advance tickets range from $12 (single day exhibit hall) to $32 (single day exhibits plus seminars), and two day passes are $62 (includes exhibit hall and seminars). Seminar only passes are available for $48. Kids 13 and under are free.

Hey Violet’s “Better By Myself”

HEY VIOLET RELEASE NEW SINGLE “BETTER BY MYSELF” TODAY

ON HI OR HEY/CAPITOL RECORDS

OFFICIAL VIDEO ALSO DEBUTS TODAY HERE

TICKETS ON-SALE TODAY FOR UPCOMING SHOWS IN SAN FRANCISCO, L.A., NYC, AND WASHINGTON DC

“Better By Myself” is the first new music the Los Angeles-based alt-pop band has released since

their critically acclaimed 2017 debut album From the Outside.

Hey Violet release a new single “Better By Myself” today on Hi or Hey/Capitol Records and available for streaming and purchase from all digital partners. In addition, an official video for the song, directed by Marcella Cytrynowicz, debuts today. Watch it HERE. “Better By Myself” which was co-written by Hey Violet, Gabe Simon, and producer Daniel Nigro, is the first of four new tracks the band is set to release throughout the Spring and Summer.

“Better By Myself” captures the duality inherent in feeling invincible in solitude because you don’t need anyone, but recognizing that perhaps being totally alone isn’t necessarily the best path forward. “It’s about being in an unhealthy relationship and having the courage to leave, but realizing maybe you’re isolating a little much,” says Hey Violet frontwoman Rena Lovelis. “I think we need to fall in love with ourselves before we fall in love with anybody else and that’s why the song sounds so celebratory. It’s about finding that happy medium between I don’t need anyone, which tends to be a defense mechanism, and being truly okay with yourself.”

Hey Violet’s 2017 debut album From the Outside featured the singles “Guys My Age,” which has amassed over 230 million global streams, “Break My Heart,” and “Hoodie,” which is approaching 200 million streams. The album racked up critical praise, including accolades from The New York Times, which called it “one of this year’s best and most provocative pop albums.” Stereogum noted that it “has plenty of attitude thanks to Lovelis’ vocal and lyrical presence,” and NYLON declared, “I challenge you to find a debut album as explosive and technicolored as Hey Violet’s From The Outside (the album) pulses with cheeky hooks and middle fingers to the status quo. Lead singer Rena Lovelis’ voice is arena-shaking. You’re in for one hell of a ride.”

Over the past few years, Hey Violet, which is Rena Lovelis, her sister Nia Lovelis (drums), Casey Moreta (lead guitar) and Iain Shipp (bass) have steadily built an engaged fanbase with their powerful, immaculately crafted alt-pop songs. “Guys My Age” was named one of the Best Songs of 2016 by The New York Times, who called it “teen-pop’s revenge: an urgent dark song about sexual rebellion” and one of the 20 Best Songs of 2016 by V Magazine. In 2017, Hey Violet was also nominated for an iHeart Radio award for Best Underground Alternative Band, dubbed an “Artist Primed For A Breakout” by Billboard, and named “Artist To Watch” by The Guardian, PopCrush, and more. The band has racked over half a billion streams worldwide, sold out their North American headline tour and performed on both The Late Late Show With James Corden and Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Hey Violet will perform several upcoming shows to celebrate the release of their new music.

All dates are below. Tickets go on sale today here.

May 28th San Francisco, CA – Swedish American Hall

May 30th Los Angeles, CA – The Troubadour

Custom Defender 90

E.C.D. Automotive Design, the award-winning creator of high-end luxury vehicles, locally delivered a Defender that is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling off-road vehicles the company has produced to date – a custom Defender 90 (D90) Soft-top powered by a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engine with 430-horsepower.

The “fun factor” of driving this custom D90 isn’t entirely from having the soft-top off in Florida while cruising the beach-line, it’s from shifting through the gears of its 5-speed manual transmission. This D90, called, Project Ranger, delivers a full senses-engaged driving experience with the soft-top off, its manual transmission, and the sound of its Borla Performance exhaust system. Project Ranger is finished in full gloss paint in the color, “Terrain,” a Ford color exclusive to their Raptor model, and is matched with 18-inch Sawtooth alloy wheels in black to compliment the exterior.

The client already owned this North American Specification (NAS) Defender 90 and sent it to E.C.D. for a full restoration. Knowing the top was going to be off most of the time in Florida, the interior was designed to be more utilitarian than luxury. It’s upholstered in a charcoal-colored, weather-resistant canvas throughout.

“Driving a D90 Soft-top with the LS3 and manual transmission is an absolute blast. Tearing up and back down through the gears is something we all enjoy here at E.C.D.,” says Tom Humble, co-founder of E.C.D. Automotive Design.

Andy Black

Today sees the release of THE GHOST OF OHIO (Lava/Republic), the much-anticipated new album from singer-songwriter Andy Black – click HERE to listen. Upon release, the album immediately debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes Rock Album Chart.

Black’s been giving fans glimpses of the album over the course of the past few weeks by releasing tracks such as “The Promise,” lead single “Westwood Road” (which has amassed over 1.7 million YouTube views) and title track “The Ghost Of Ohio.”

The Ghost Of Ohio sees Black re-teaming with Grammy nominated producer John Feldmann (Blink-182, Panic! at the Disco), who helmed 2016’s acclaimed debut The Shadow Side.

The album marries melancholy themes with upbeat rock and pop, mining the underreported haunted history of Black’s hometown to tell a story in allegory and grandeur that explores his childhood anxieties and obsessions. “I’ve always liked the idea of building worlds, making a character for myself, in very heightened and stylized dimensions I could live in,” he says. “It’s about expressing myself creatively, while making something that didn’t exist before.”

The unabashed anthem-making of Bruce Springsteen, The Killers, and U2 collide with darker undertones alongside an all-new haunted folklore, mixing boyhood dreams with otherworldly wonder. Quite literally, The Ghost of Ohio is the tale of someone who died young, whose spirit inhabits an area for a hundred years, looking for ways to connect, feeling forgotten, fighting an overwhelming disassociation. But it’s also less straightforward story and more “songs inspired by” the specifics.

Black, who’s always had a reverence for the magical convergence of sight and sound, created the diverse album to also serve as a soundtrack for its graphic novel counterpart, marrying melancholy themes with upbeat rock and pop to tell the tale of someone who died young and whose spirit inhabits an area for a hundred years looking for ways to connect. The album’s artwork was painted by Eliran Kantor (Iced Earth, Testament).

Black discussed the album during a recent interview with NME, which can be viewed HERE.

He’s performing select songs from the album on his current Ghost of North America Tour, a headlining run that kicked off last week in Sacramento, CA (see itinerary below). The fact that Black can perform at all is a miracle, as he had an emergency appendectomy less than a week before the tour kicked off.

Don’t miss your chance to experience Andy Black’s The Ghost of North America Tour.

U.S. Soccer Foundation’s “It’s Everyone’s Game!” 25th Anniversary Celebration

Nearly 500 supporters of the U.S. Soccer Foundation came together at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles – on the pitch of Major League Soccer’s LAFC – Monday evening to commemorate the organization’s achievements of growing the game and providing youth recreation opportunities in underserved communities throughout its 25-year history.

The U.S. Soccer Foundation’s 25th anniversary celebration featured many of the women and men who have been a part of the organization throughout its history and supporters from the most storied soccer teams in American history, including members of the “‘99ers,” the World Cup-winning 1999 U.S. Women’s National Team. The Foundation and its supporters also used the 25th anniversary celebration to highlight the contributions of five national leaders who are bringing soccer to underserved communities nationwide.

“We’ve been honored to play a role in the phenomenal growth of the game in the United States,” said Ed Foster-Simeon, President & CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. “Sport has existed for millennia because there’s a payoff for everyone who plays – not just those who make it to the very top. Mastery of soccer skills builds confidence and self-esteem. The game teaches teamwork and leadership. We look forward to the next 25 years as we continue to make soccer everyone’s game.”

Six Day Ancient Ireland Tour

The cinematic journey back in time is nearly over. The History channel’s blockbuster hit, “Vikings” is scheduled to conclude its sixth – and final season in 2020.
But in Ireland the Vikings and their lasting influence still remain. An award-winning tour operator, Vagabond Small Group Tours of Ireland, recreates for visitors Ireland’s own Viking history in some of the places where the Vikings pillaged and plundered in their quest for precious baubles and arable lands.

The company’s Driftwood: 6 Day Ancient Ireland Tour travels south from the gateway city, Dublin, through County Wicklow (old Norse for “Vikings Meadow”) where many episodes of “Vikings” were shot. (This fully guided small group tour won a “best” award at the 2019 Irish Tourism Industry Awards.)

Guests may envision Vikings landing longboats off the Irish Sea and the flags of Norman invaders from England who, with help, eventually did them in. The artifacts they’ve left behind signal bloodshed one moment and repentance the next. More than any other region of Ireland, this coastline separated by mountains from inland valleys defines how the Irish came to be in the 5000 years since Stone Age settlements.
“A common view is the Vikings were raiders who didn’t stick around. But some did. As early as 800 AD they set up winter camps (longphorts) here, plotting how to loot the wealth of monasteries, intermarrying with indigenous Celtic Gael, putting down roots and founding our first capital at Waterford,” notes Rob Rankin, co-owner of Vagabond Tours. “The Vikings had a settlement in 841 AD in what is now Dublin. Then in the late 12th century, another predator, the Normans, thrust and parried the assorted kingdoms of Gaelic Ireland.”

The tour’s first major stop explores the site of a Viking attack on Christmas night in 835 AD on Glendalough, a 6th century monastic center. Farther south comes the Viking Triangle, the virtual museum cities of Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny. The Vikings founded Ireland’s first city, Waterford (Norse for “windy fjord”), in 914. Here one can visit museums and buildings rife with Viking lore. Participants on this trip have the option to:

  • Tour the Viking Museum in Ireland’s oldest civic building, the 800-year- old Reginald’s Tower;
  • Watch history come to life at the 3D King of the Vikings virtual reality experience.
  • Step into a real 13th century chamber at the Medieval Museum,
  • Behold the elegance of 18th century Georgian Waterford at the Bishop’s Palace Museum.

While in Waterford, now famous worldwide for its crystal stemware, guests revel in two nights of luxury – hardly Viking style — at Waterford Castle Hotel. (The castle became a hotel in the 1980s and underwent a major refurbishment in 2015.) Little Island, on which the castle stands, is strategically encircled by Kings Channel and River Suir. From the 6th century it housed a monastic center. From the 9th to 11th centuries the Vikings built fortifications on what was then called Island Vra (Dane’s Island). The early 12th century stone castle remained in the hands of its original owners, the Fitzgeralds (later kings of Ireland) for over 800 years. The island was a reward for the family’s role in the 1170 Norman invasion. (In Woodstown, just upstream from the castle, is relatively new evidence of a significant Viking settlement unearthed in the 21st century.)

At the mouth of another river the Vikings established in the 9th century a settlement they called Ueigsfjord or Waesfjord (“ford of the waterlogged island”), today’s Wexford. The Norse controlled this region until challenged, in part, by the Normans early in the 12th century. (In nearby New Ross guests may opt to visit the Ros Tapestry where 150 stitchers since 1998 have created 15 dramatic tapestries depicting Norman history in Ireland.)

In Kilkenny, the stronghold of a Norse clan since the 6th century, artifacts are buried deep. But in the 1990s a tour guide discovered silver and bronze treasures including buttons from a Viking coat.

In addition to Waterford Castle, other aristocratic homes and their gardens are players on this itinerary. Visitors will:

  • Behold the splendor of 12th century Kilkenny Castle,
  • Ramble the Robinsonian gardens of Altamount House,
  • Dress for battle at the medieval Ballyhack Castle,
  • Walk in awe around 13th century Tintern Abbey,
  • Kiss the Blarney Stone and explore Blarney Castle and Gardens.

Departures (14 total in 2019) from Dublin are from mid-April through mid-October. The per person double rate is €1,819 (€315 single supplement).

On all of its tours, Vagabond staff curate locally owned accommodations, pubs and restaurants that help serve their goal of authenticity. In the end the mission is to have guests “love Ireland as much as we do.” Transport is in a custom 4×4 Mercedes ‘Vagatron’ that allows access beyond where regular tour buses go.

Robert Englund Hosts New Series “Shadows Of History”

Veteran actor and legendary horror movie icon Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger of the “A Nightmare On Elm Street” franchise) resurrects the frightening, odd and creepiest stories ripped straight from the headlines of yesteryear in Travel Channel’s new series Shadows of History (wt).  Newspapers from America’s past document bizarre, mysterious accounts that seem too incredible to be true. With the help of historians and scholars, Englund makes every one-hour episode an immersive experience designed to raise goose bumps and quicken pulses. The six-episode series will air later this year.
