Law Banning Shipment of French Wines

Delaware Contemplates Law Banning Shipment of French Wines

National Association of Wine Retailers Ask For A Fair and Consumer Friendly Wine Shipping Law

The following statement was issued by National Association of Wine Retailers’ Executive Director Tom Wark on the attempt in Delaware to pass a wine shipping law that would ban shipment of all French, Italian, Spanish and other imported wines sold by retailers, while allowing only shipments from American wineries.

“Once again the Delaware legislature is attempting to pass a law that allows Delawareans to receive wine shipments from out of state wineries, while making it illegal for residents to receive shipments of all French, Italian, Spanish or any other wine sold by an out-of-state wine retailer. It’s a nonsensical ban on the shipment of any imported wine, any wines from “wine of the month” clubs, of most Kosher wines and the rare and collectible wines by out-of-state wine auction houses.

Senate Bill 49, sponsored by Senator Dave Sokola (R), is a good idea, but poorly executed. As with past attempts to give Delawareans access to wines now hard to find in the state, SB 49 allows consumer wine shipments from out-of-state—but only from out-of-state wineries.

“But what of the hundreds of thousands of imported wines only sold in the U.S. by wine stores and wine retailers. Why should these be off limits? Why should Delaware residents be labeled criminals if they ship in a French wine from an out-of-state wine store, but not if they have an Oregon Pinot Noir shipped to them from a winery? The distinction is without merit.

“Delaware wine consumers and commonsense demand better from their lawmakers and those pushing the ban on shipment of imported wines. Delaware consumers should have access to the thousands of French, Italian, German, Spanish and other imported wines that are only sold in the U.S. by wine retailers.

“This looming attempt to criminalize Delaware wine lovers who prefer French, German, New Zealand, Argentine, Italian or the coveted Bordeaux and Burgundy wines that are in short supply can easily be fixed by members of the Senate Banking, Business and Insurance committee who will conduct a hearing on SB 49 on April 10. The bill merely needs to be amended to allow wine shipments from out-of-state retailers in addition to out-of-state wineries.

“Delaware residents may receive out-of-state shipments of food, but there is no ban on Spanish ham shipments. They may receive shipments of shoes, but there is no ban on Italian loafers. They may receive shipments of books, but there is no ban on French novels. Why is Delaware contemplating a ban on the shipment of imported wines from retailers?

“If Delaware is finally going to drag its wine laws out of the 20th century by allowing consumers to receive shipments from out-of-state, they shouldn’t do so by also implementing a ban on certain wines just because they are sold by retailers and not wineries The Delaware legislature, starting with the Senate Banking, Business and Insurance Committee, ought to pass a clean, inclusive, fair and consumer-friendly wine shipping bill.”

‘The Little Yellow Book’

The Little Yellow Book, quotations from Chairman Xi Dada includes 300 quotations from China’s president Xi Jinping one of the most powerful men in today’s world. Out of hundreds of speeches, press releases and news, the authors curated this “best of” covering a disparate of subjects since the first moment Mr. Xi assumed office, back in the winter of 2012, until October of 2018. Within 180 pages of easy-to-read material, the Little Yellow Book highlights Xi’s governing philosophies centered on Chinese Dream, elaborating on a variety of issues from culture and arts to climate change, from Internet control to One Belt, One Road, from national security to military vision, from innovation and green development to wealth sharing. Apparently inspired by its far-famed predecessor the Little Red Book, Xi Dada’s quotes are plucked out of context and strung together without much regard for chronology. Chairman Mao’s red booklet boasted to be the second most printed book after the Bible. It was used during the Cultural Revolution not only to streamline ideology, but also as a weapon to defend communist China against its enemies. While currently being fleshed out by Party scholars, Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristic for a New Era are commanding domestic media channel as well as occupying the country’s ad spaces and billboards to be studied on a daily basis by its citizens. School children and Party officials alike have been learning the theories named after political theorists like Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and Mao Zedong. College students and white-collar employees receive certificates for accurately memorizing Xi Jinping Thought and use it as a guidebook for living, working and policymaking. In the first week of October 2018, Hunan TV, one of China’s largest television networks, has aired a new quiz show about the life and philosophy of China’s current leader. The ideology was recently written into the Chinese Constitution.

With close-ups and a real-time camera running approach, this fine collection of Xi Dada’s quotes is an attempt to reveal the true intentions of China’s leader. In a world overwhelmed by information, this one little book cuts through noises and gives some solid yet to-the-point answers to the China-related issues that are relevant for the world today and tomorrow. Apparently inspired by its famous predecessor The Little Red Book, this small publication not only taps into the current trend of bringing political tracts into the 21st century, it’s vigorously different and delivers more within less pages. Return of the Instapump OG

Reebok Instapump is Reborn For 2019

“At the time, some people thought the Instapump Fury OG was an affront to everything that running and performance was about, because it was that different. And to this day, you either get it or you don’t. No apologies. No compromise.” – Steven Smith

We admit it: in 1994, the Instapump wasn’t for everybody. A running shoe that was completely lace-less, missing a huge chunk of its midsole, and stuffed with every bit of bleeding-edge footwear tech the early 90s had to offer? That was always going to be the kind of sneaker that you either “got”… or you didn’t.

Meet us in 2019, and despite how many contemporary hype sneaker designs take inspiration from the Instapump, the honest truth is that there are plenty of people who still don’t get it. Twenty-five years later, the Instapump’s silhouette, features, and performance quality feel just as bold as ever. This year, we introduce the reborn edition of the Instapump Fury for 2019: the Instapump OG .

Don’t call it an update: the Instapump OG is the same sneaker that blew people’s minds in 1994, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Pioneering in its technology, rebellious in its aesthetics, the reborn Instapump is the essence of Reebok’s early 90s vision to create a truly essentialist sneaker. Every layer of the Instapump’s material has a purpose and a reason for being—and it’s hard to improve on that. The future was then—and now it’s back again.

The Instapump OG will be available on April 5th on Reebok.com.

Birdman & Juvenile “Just Another Gangsta”

BIRDMAN & JUVENILE RELEASE NEW ALBUM Just Another Gangsta AVAILABLE TODAY

Available at All Digital Retailers Now

Nodding to the golden age of Cash Money Records, Birdman & Juvenile team up to release their collaborative album J.A.G. at all digital retailers today.

Short for “Just Another Gangster,” both the album title and lead single “J.A.G.” take you back to the bouncy bling era of the label by reuniting legendary Co-Founder and multi-platinum rapper Birdman with Southern luminary and fellow icon Juvenile. The larger-than-life music video already surpassed 4.3 million YouTube/VEVO views, and the song impacted radio in February where it continues rising.

On the track, these two New Orleans titans lock into a lyrical back-and-forth before delivering a chanting refrain over a slick bass line and steady beat. With a whole lot of swag and style. It’s as infectious and icy as anything they’ve ever done together, and it evokes the timeless nature of their chemistry initially honed by way of collaborations from dozens of classic releases.

“J.A.G.” is stacked with bold and big bangers. “Dreams” featuring Choppa showcases more slick Southern flows over acoustic guitar and piano. Choppa brings his own fire to the track as Juvenile turns up with another hummable hook. “Broke” unfolds with street wit and charm, while a bluesy guitar lead gives way to rhyme fireworks on the nostalgic “Back Then.” “From The Bottom” could serve as a mission statement for either Juvenile or Birdman as it documents the come-up to triumph in vivid detail. The album concludes on the hard-hitting and bounce-driven “One Two.”

The entire project sees Birdman and Juvenile rapping with focus and fire that’s always fresh. Additionally, it features production courtesy of Rich Gang in-house team.

Birdman and Juvenile recently engaged a full court press blitz that saw them appearing on multiple television and radio shows. They notably guested on The Wendy Williams Show to perform the title track and speak on the project. Additionally, Juvenile guested on The Breakfast Club, and his appearance racked up a staggering 100K views in under six hours as it approached the 400k mark now.

Be on the lookout for more big news and moves from Birdman, Juvenile, and Cash Money Records in 2019.

TRAVEL JOURNALIST THOMAS WILMER INTERVIEWS 360 MAGAZINE PUBLISHER VAUGHN LOWERY

Small to medium sized business often fall short due to high turnover. Vaughn Lowery, Publisher of 360 Magazine, provides listeners with first-hand knowledge on the ever-shifting world of digital publishing and content creation through a youthful lens. Likewise with his innate ability to be accessible, he speaks to working in tandem with emerging generations and how their input could be detrimental to the survival of a brand.

LISTEN HERE

An Additional Conversation with 360 Magazine’s Publisher Vaughn Lowery

By Tara McDonough

If Vaughn Lowery was asked what his idea of success was 10 years ago, his answer would be very different from what it is today. He may have said that success means doing what he loves to do, being accomplished, or having a certain amount of material things.

“Success to me now is having a purpose in life and feeling passionate and fulfilled by it,” says Lowery.

Lowery got his first taste of the industry while interning for Vibe Magazine while on Summer vacation from Cornell University. His sister drove him into New York City every morning to drop him off and always advised him to be the first one at the office. One morning Lowery found himself alone with the publisher of the magazine at the time, Keith Clinkscales, which gave him the opportunity to speak with him one-on-one. It was due to his sister’s advice that he got the chance to do what no other intern would normally get to do.

After finishing up at Cornell in just three years, Lowery became an executive trainee with Saks Fifth Avenue. He was able to get along with everyone in the office and was doing great when he was called into his boss’s office one afternoon.

“She told me I was in the wrong business; that I was very charismatic and should try acting,” Lowery says, “but, I liked the path I was on at that time.”

It wasn’t until Lowery was asked by someone connected to the talent industry if he was a model that he truly considered breaking into the talent industry. Shortly after taking professional photos and getting them out to agencies, Lowery ended up with Ford Models. From there he did photoshoots, tv commercials, and ad campaigns, all while still working in outside sales at Aetna US Healthcare. Once he began modelling full time his face was in the pages of GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and Gap. By being around people of all different positions, primarily in the magazine publishing industry, Lowery came to understand how content was produced. It was right before the recession hit while he was living in LA that Lowery made the transition from modelling to the publishing industry.

It was his experience in modelling that inspired Lowery’s creation of the 360 Magazine. While working on any given shoot, Lowery was often one of just three or less black men. Often times he was the only black man on a set which drew his attention to the lack of representation in the media industry. Lowery’s goal for the 360 Magazine was that it would fill this niche and promote diversity across the publishing world, specifically the covers of its magazines.

For those wanting to work in the media industry, specifically in the publishing world, Lowery suggests starting from the ground up.

“Being self taught and learning as you go is something you need to be open to,” says Lowery, “Ask tons of questions, and learn everything you can from every position.”

Lowery warns that it’s important to be open and cordial to everyone, because you don’t know when your paths will cross again. Making connections and using them is how most people gain opportunities. He also adds that just by hanging out with people you’ll always learn something that you can apply to aspects of your work.

Things in the industry have been changing and becoming more digitally focused since the beginning of 360 Magazine’s launch. The magazine was started during a time of e-zines, so it’s not a surprise that the website came first. Lowery had experience with creating websites from a young age so the move from print to digital was natural for him. It was clear to him where the industry was going.

“Print was getting costly, bookstores were looking dilapidated and even Barnes and Noble was focusing on their version of the tablet, the Nook,” says Lowery, “All the magazines were looking alike anyway.”

Print was still important though. Besides the fact that advertising agencies want to see a physical copy of a magazine before working with them, print is taken more seriously due to its cost. Other companies will be aware that a certain magazine has the funds to support itself if they have a print copy to show for it.

360 Magazine printed their first issue in 2009, but it was costly. Lowery began thinking that there had to be some other way to work with print. It was then that he decided to do print on demand publications. 360 Magazine linked with Blurb, which allowed anyone to order a print copy of the magazine right from our website. They’ve been distributing to them for 9 years now.

The magazine’s estimated circulation, which is based on print, is 110,000 from print on demand. This number doesn’t tend to move much, but most people end up reading 360 Magazine’s online articles through WordPress.

When asked what makes a media contributor most marketable, Lowery says that in this industry you need a social following and the ability to network. Being accessible and having a portfolio of published work is a great place to start as well.

Do it all,” Lowery says, “monetize, write, take photos, be on time, and take initiatives.”

The hardest thing about the industry in Lowery’s opinion is breaking into it and surviving on freelance jobs along the way. Writers should be prepared to sacrifice mentally, physically and financially. While working for a publication, Lowery says that writers need to do what they can to become a valuable asset to them. That way, a publication will be more likely to keep you on board and help you in the future.

As for internship positions at 360 Magazine, Lowery aims to teach interns everything that he didn’t learn. He’s assigns articles for interns to write, pushes them to network, has them do coverage and teaches them how to get published or to self-publish.

“We teach interns how to be resourceful and find themselves in the organization,” says Lowery.

When interns can bring business to the magazine, the magazine will bring business to them. Special assignment opportunities are available for interns who finish their program and are still looking to remain involved. Lowery says that while the magazine is specifically looking to groom editors, that if a publication wants to really pop, then they have to have a revolving door.

When asked what goals he has for the future of 360 Magazine, Lowery responded that he aims to keep it three dimensional with podcasts and web series.

“I want to be able to put the brand out to different countries and places in America,” says Lowery, Local presences would strengthen us.”

He also says that he’s interested in the possibility of a reality spin off or docu-series, as well as introducing more formal programs for educational purposes.

Dealing with the Russians

Andrew Monaghan Presents his plan for moving forward with Russia in “Dealing with the Russians”

How to handle Russia? This question has become ever more prominent as the Euro-Atlantic community’s relations with Russia languish in deep in systemic crisis, with dialogue suspended, reciprocal sanctions in place and proxy wars raging. The wars in Ukraine and Syria, accusations of Russian interference in domestic politics and the attempted assassination of the Skripals on UK soil have all contributed to soaring tension in the relationship.

Yet faced with this array of serious challenges, Euro-Atlantic thinking about Russia remains stuck in twentieth-century rhetoric, trapped by misleading abstract labels and unsure whether to engage Moscow in dialogue or enhance deterrence and collective defence. Instead of thinking in these terms, leading Russia expert Andrew Monaghan argues that we must devise a new grand strategy for dealing with the Russians. Examining the ongoing Euro-Atlantic debate over Russia and framing Moscow’s own position towards the West, he sets out the foundations of a forward-looking strategy; one that can accommodate the many complex challenges presented by this new era of competition between Russia, Europe and the United States.

The Author

Andrew Monaghan is Director of Research on Russia and Northern European Defence and Security, The Changing Character of War Centre, Pembroke College, University of Oxford.

Reviews

“A brilliant and hugely enjoyable book. Cogent, well researched and cleverly argued, Monaghan’s illuminating analysis serves as a timely reminder of the dangers of misunderstanding Russia and an “antidote” to Russian stereotypes that prevail in the West.” – Nazrin Mehdiyeva, St Antony’s College, Oxford

“An aggressive, revanchist Russia and the return of Great Power competition make this book required reading.  Monaghan’s extensive knowledge of Russian history, politics, language, and culture give him insights that are crucial to understanding Russia and finding a way back to some sort of normal relationship between Russia and the West.” – LTG (Ret) Ben Hodges, Center for European Policy Analysis

“Dealing with the Russians provides a fresh, informed, and rational approach to solving the problems that arise when nations attempt to deal strategically with the Russian Federation. It will be essential reading for those who prefer to master history rather than fall victim to it.” – David M. Glantz, Carlisle, PA
