Maps Glover

By Katelynn Dunn

Maps Glover closed his month long residency at the A Creative DC: Brookland studio space with a performance art piece titled “Don’t Talk to the Artist While in Practice” and an open house for fellow artists and supporters. Glover is a DMV local that went to school at the Delaware College of Art and Design. He creates work inspired by human behavior and observation. He visualizes how time affects that behavior and how observation of that behavior alters the viewers perspective. Performance is where he best expresses himself, and it is in this medium that the ideas he has about our personal interactions with our emotions and decisions come to life.

During the residency he created 27 artworks centered on police brutality, media and the speed of life. In the middle of the studio stands an installation, he calls an altar, created for a previous performance series that took place at transformer dc. The installation includes paper airplanes folded, unfolded and refolded by hand that represent the 987 African Americans killed by police this year. Police brutality and black life are subject matters repeatedly examined by Glover and are present throughout all of his work.

A new theme in his work is the checker board pattern which represents the quickness of life. The theme of age is present due to the artist’s recent birthday. Additionally, he uses visuals of news and media in a couple already sold paintings that show TV personalities discussing people’s lives and ultimately misrepresenting them.

Tips to Grooming Your Dog at Home

Our dogs are our most faithful friends and companions, making our homes more welcoming and lively. For this reason, if you are a pet parent, it is your responsibility to ensure that your 4-legged buddy is well groomed to keep them happy and health all day long. Grooming your dog regularly keeps it neat, comfortable and healthy, enhancing its charming looks at all times. Most people prefer the services of a professional groomer to help their dogs maintain a cute and clean appearance.

However, if you are running on a low budget, you may prefer to groom your dog at home. This will not only save you money, but can also strengthen the bond between you and your little friend. It is quite easy and affordable. Be it Poodle, Chow Chow or Shih tzu grooming, with the right grooming tools and techniques, you can hack it without the expensive trips to the dog-salon. Here are some DIY dog grooming tips.

1. Invest in the best dog grooming tools and products

Before you start the grooming sessions, it is important to purchase the best professional tool, for every task to make the session comfortable and enjoyable for both you and your dog.

Below are some important tools for your dog grooming:

● A dog comb/ Brush – Depending on the type and length of the dog coat, you can use metal-pinned brush (for long coats) or rubber-teethed brush (for short-haired dogs).

● A pair of professional grade scissors – For smooth cutting without pulling or snagging which can be uncomfortable for the dog.

● Dog Clippers – Electric clippers designed for dog grooming. Avoid using human clippers.

● Nail Trimmer – To keep the paws clean and safe.

● Dog shampoo – High quality and free from chemicals that can damage the dog’s coat or skin.

To get the best results, it is important to consult a professional groomer to understand the best tools for your dog’s grooming need.

2. Create and maintain a conducive grooming environment

Grooming your dog can be stressful and uncomfortable, especially if your dog is not used to it. It is therefore critical to select the best time and place for the exercise, and make the grooming sessions fun and enjoyable for both of you.

● Start grooming your puppy as early as possible. This will make it get used to being touched and the grooming routine.

● Choose a calm and quite place for grooming

● Relax and use a friendly tone – Your dog can sense when you are stressed or angry, and this will make it anxious and uncomfortable, making the session difficult for you.

● Calm and soothe the dog before you start to make her feel comfortable and safe.

● Complement and reward your dog with a special treat after grooming.

● Start slowly – If your dog is not used to regular grooming, you can start with fewer sessions per week and increase as they adapt to the exercise.

3. Brush/ Comb the Coat Regularly

Whether your dog has short or long coat, brushing and combing is part of basic pet care. It helps to remove dead hair and other types of dirt, as well as prevents hair mats to keep the coat in a good condition. For dogs with long hair, daily brushing is recommended but for short to medium haired, brushing 3 or 4 times a week will be enough. When brushing your dog, it is important to:

● Work out all the tangles to give the dog a shiny and a healthy looking coat.

● Inspect the skin for swelling, reddening or other signs of infections.

● Be gentle and thorough to avoid brush-burning the skin.

● Use the right brush and comb for your dog’s coat type and size.

4. Bathing your Dog

Even when your dog has a healthy and shiny coat, it is important to give her a bath whenever necessary or depending on the dog’s activities. This will help remove accumulated dirt from the skin to give the dog a pleasant and fresh smell. Besides, it helps to remove dead hair and enhance the coat glow.

To properly wash your dog, you need to:

● Use warm water even during hot weather.

● Comb the dog before bathing.

● Use a dog tub or bathe the pet outdoors.

● Use a vet-recommended shampoo and conditioner.

● Rinse the dog with warm water.

● Dry the dog with a soft towel or blow-dry the fur in low-heat.

● Brush the coat after bathe.

5. Coat Maintenance Technique

If your dog’s coat is overgrown, you may need to tame it by trimming or shaving. You can use an electric clippers or professional sheers to cut the dog’s hair to your preferred length. A clipper is mostly recommended as it is easy to use and gives you a uniform hair length for a particular setting. Then use a pair of scissors to trim the hair in sensitive areas like the face and tail. Additionally, always ensure that the coat is dry when trimming or shaving the dog.

If you are not sure about anything, it is important to consult an expert for safety and to get the best results.

Baby Sea Otter Reunited With Mother

Watch Video of Baby Sea Otter Reunited With its Mother in Morro Bay

Morro Bay Harbor Department Saves the Day for This Otter Family

In between cloudbursts yesterday, a baby sea otter was reunited with its mother. The baby, spotted alone by one of the community’s commercial fishermen, got assistance from the Harbor Department, the Marine Mammal Center and Mike Harris of Fish & Wildlife. The city of Morro Bay caught this video of the baby being released before swimming to its mother.

As the Harbor Department commented, “All in a day’s work.”

For the last couple years, thereߣs been an abundance of pure unadulterated cuteness going on in the seaside town due to an increase in California Sea Otter families that call Morro Bay home. Mommas and babies are everywhere eating and grooming each other as if no one is watching. But we are and we canߣt look away – they are so dang cute! Now is the perfect time to catch a glimpse of these sea creatures in their natural habitat since Morro Bay harbor is experiencing the highest count to date of these adorable critters. A survey taken last May of the Morro Bay harbor documented adult sea otters and nine pups, a significantly higher number than the typical five or fewer otters frequenting the harbor in the early 2000s.

“Large gatherings of otters throughout the harbor have attracted tourists and locals all along the waterfront to experience them in their natural habitat,” explains Jennifer Little, Executive Director of Discover Morro Bay. “You can watch along the shore or rent paddleboards and watch from a safe distance on the water as they forage for food and groom their young. They use rocks and other tools to break open crab and local food sources and are so fun to watch. We’ve seen up to 30 or 40 of them at a time floating around on their backs and enjoying life in Morro Bay.”

Just plop down a beach chair along the Morro Bay Harbor Walk and start watching – they’re everywhere and easy to find. If there isnߣt a family of otters hanging out already, they will soon appear. The southeast side of Morro Rock is a great landmark for sea otter viewing as is Coleman beach at the intersection of Embarcadero and Coleman Drive. There are also public viewing spots all along the Embarcadero for wildlife viewing in between the plethora of restaurants, boutique shops and wine bars. To get an even closer look, paddle out in a kayak or rent a boat at Bay Cruisers and Electric Boats. Visitors can also take a ride on the Lost Isle Tiki boat to see the otters and the ever-barking sea lions, which includes a quick detour to the Morro Bay natural sand spit. Kayaks can be rented at Kayak Horizons and the Kayak Shack.

Experts say what’s really driving the population increase is the abundance of food they find in the waters of Morro Bay. Sea otters are integral to the health of the Morro Bay harbor environment. When viewing otters be very careful as they are wild animals and may react poorly if approached. When viewing from the water, it’s best to stay at least five kayak lengths away at all times and enjoy them in a responsible manner.

LOT18 AND PLAYBOY PARTNER FOR THE FIRST-TIME TO CREATE A SAVORY CALIFORNIA RED WINE BLEND

The Limited Edition Wine Is Now Available Exclusively Through LOT18

Winemaker Lot18 has teamed up with Playboy Enterprises, Inc. to produce the ‘Playboy California Red Wine’, a limited edition, high-quality blend crafted for wine aficionados and Playboy fans alike.

In celebration of Playboy’s 65-year anniversary, and just in time for Valentine’s Day, Lot18’s specially crafted red wine blend will undoubtedly please any wine lover. The bottle itself makes for a perfect gift for collectors, with a unique label that presents the famed Playboy Bunny Costume. Inspired by the sultry silhouette of the iconic Bunny, Playboy illustrator and designer, Katie Bailie, captured the essential details of the Costume – a satin bodice, ears, and bowtie applied in lavish gold mosaic as a gracious nod to Playboy’s heritage.

Playboy California Red Wine Blend can be ordered exclusively here while supplies last. The wine was masterfully created by the team at Lot18 to celebrate the iconic brand and its legacy of work.

Playboy California Red Wine Blend

Robust and intriguing, this California red wine blend is balanced by just the right amount of fruit, oak and acidity. On the palate, ripe, luscious flavors of cherry and dark fruits are laced with vanilla and spice, followed by well-integrated toasted oak nuances on the finish.

The luscious and spicy wine can be enjoyed on its own, or pairs excellently with a perfectly grilled steak.

About Lot18

Founded in 2010, Lot18 provides the best possible prices on high-quality wines – some well-known favorites, some hard-to-find selections, and plenty in between. Lot18 employs a team of experts who work closely with quality-driven winemakers around the world. These experts live by a simple rule: If they wouldn’t spend their own money on a wine, they don’t make it available on Lot18. The wines selected are unique in their own right, and represent the highest quality and value. In early 2013, Lot18 launched Tasting Room, a unique wine club offering an unprecedented level of customization and personalization.  The customer starts by tasting a range of wines (from a light, crisp white to a full-bodied red) in mini-bottle format and then gives feedback online through an innovative, yet simple, guided comparative tasting. This process generates a wine profile that allows Tasting Room to capture the nuances of each customer’s palate. Tasting Room then uses this information to provide a specific selection of wines in standard-size bottles to match. Tasting Room is now the fastest growing wine club in the United States and launched a very successful national TV campaign in March 2016.

THIS VALENTINE’S DAY, MARTIN LAWRENCE GALLERIES CELEBRATES LOVE!

*Featured art by Marc Chagall, Lovers in Grey (Jacques Lassaigne, m.194) 1957 Lithograph

Love is in the air this February at Martin Lawrence Galleries (MLG). All nine of its fine art locations (Soho, San Francisco, Las Vegas, La Jolla, New Orleans, Maui, Orange County, Schaumburg, Dallas) will be offering veteran and first-time collectors alike original and unique paintings, drawings, sculpture and limited-edition graphics from over 40 of the world’s most renowned 20th and 21st-century artists.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, MLG unveils works by Marc Chagall, Robert Indiana and André Masson, Among others. No expression of love is more eternal than a work of fine art.

“In our life, there is a single color, as on an artist’s palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the color of love”. Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was born in Vitsyebsk, Belarus and his artistic view of romance and intrigue greets us in the captivating Chagall Les Amourex en Gris (Lovers in Grey), (Jacques Lassaigne, M.194)1957. Black strokes of the night envelope two lovers illuminated by the bath of light floating from the moon. With beautiful spots of bright colors masterfully placed about, the composition is light and fluid with a sense of movement and peace. The lovers touch their foreheads tenderly and gaze at one another though a grace and attitude that is purely and powerfully Chagall. This beautiful testament to the bond of love must be viewed to be fully appreciated

Honored for his distinct style and pioneering role, Marc Chagall painted dream-like subjects rooted in personal history and Eastern European folklore. He worked in several mediums, including painting, printmaking, and book illustration, and his stained-glass windows can be seen in New York, France, and Jerusalem. Chagall emigrated to Paris in 1910 and began experimenting with Cubism, befriending painters Robert Delaunay and Fernand Léger. Chagall’s style has been described as a hybrid of Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism, and his supernatural subjects are thought to have significantly influenced the Surrealists. Though he actively engaged in the Parisian artistic community, art for Chagall was first and foremost a means of personal expression. He rightfully viewed his imagery and allegory as uniquely his own.

“It would be my intention that everybody should have love, and there are a lot of people in the world.” Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana (1928-2018) was an American Pop artist whose work drew inspiration from signs, billboards, and commercial logos. He is best known for his series of LOVE paintings, which employed bold and colorful letterforms to spell out the word “love.” “Oddly enough, I wasn’t thinking at all about anticipating the love generation and hippies,” he once explained. “It was a spiritual concept. It isn’t a sculpture of love any longer. It’s become the very theme of love itself.” Born Robert Earl Clark on September 13, 1928, in New Castle, IN, he adopted the name of his home state after serving in the US military. Indiana went on to receive his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1954. His work grew in popularity over the decades, with both his LOVE and HOPE motifs transformed into numerous public sculptures. In September 2013, the Whitney Museum of American Art proudly exhibited “Robert Indiana: Beyond LOVE,” the artist’s first retrospective in New York.

The ‘Book of Love’ project was conceived by Robert Indiana as a portfolio of prints and corresponding poems that would make a definitive statement on his masterpiece LOVE, fulfilling his original vision as both a poet and a painter. Each poem has a highly raised embossment of LOVE, trapped in colors, just below the title, each poem hand pencil initialed by the artist.

Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others. MLG is extremely proud to offer them to collectors.

André Masson (1896-28 October 1987) was born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, a town just north of Paris. A childhood spent close to nature made a lasting impression on Masson, and he drew inspiration from life and landscape imagery throughout his career. At age 11 he enrolled in the Académie Royale des beaux-arts and the École des arts décoratifs in Brussels, where he studied with the Symbolist painter Constant Montald. He first encountered modern art through the work of James Ensor before learning about the ideas of the Futurists and Cubists. At age 16, he was awarded the Grand Prix de l’Académie for painting. While in Paris, he became interested in Nicolas Poussin’s representations of mythological themes, subjects that he would later treat in his work.

During the early 1920s in Paris, Masson joined the new Surrealist group after one of his paintings had attracted the attention of the movement’s leader, André Breton. Masson soon became the foremost practitioner of automatic writing, which, when applied to drawing, was a form of a spontaneous composition intended to express impulses and images arising directly from the unconscious. Hi paintings and drawings from the late 1920s and the ’30s are turbulent, suggestive renderings of scenes of violence, eroticism, and

physical metamorphosis. A natural draftsman, he used curved, expressive lines to delineate biomorphic forms that border on the abstract.

Also included in MLG’s celebration of love are hand-signed serigraphs by Erté, the father of Art Deco, original paintings by Robert Deyber, whose works offer unique visual interpretations of clichés, euphemisms and idioms and Brad Faine, an internationally recognized artist and printmaker.

Rise in Obesity-Related Cancers

A new analysis, published in the Lancet Public Health, raises the alarm that the rates of obesity-related cancers are rising in younger and younger adults. In the new study, six of twelve types of obesity-related cancers have significantly increased between 1995-2014 and the risk of these cancers is increasing in each successive younger age group. These cancers include colorectal, pancreatic, gallbladder, kidney cancer and multiple myeloma (a type of blood cancer). These cancer types are particularly concerning because they are very serious and account for over 150,000 deaths in the U.S. every year.

“These numbers are worrying but not surprising; the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) recently sounded the alarm that having overweight and obesity cause at least 12 types of cancer. However, the younger and younger age bracket in which we see rates increasing is even more troubling and demands a response. We cannot just watch these rates go up and ignore the factors that we know are contributing to these increases,” says Dr. Nigel Brockton, Vice President of Research at AICR.

Disturbingly, over 70% of Americans have overweight or obesity according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And AICR maintains that cancer risk increases across each higher category of Body Mass Index (BMI) as an indicator of body fatness (Healthy = 18.5-24.9, Overweight = 25-29.9, and Obesity = 30 and above).

A mere five BMI points (kg/m2) separate the three basic (healthy, overweight, obese) BMI categories. It is important to emphasize that cancer risk is not limited to the extreme category of obesity only, the risk increases for those with overweight too. For example, compared to those having healthy BMI range overweight category face an increased liver cancer risk of 30% and those having obesity of 60%.

The recent AICR Energy Balance and Body Fatness Report presented strong evidence for factors that can reduce risk of having weight gain, overweight and obesity, including walking, aerobic physical activity, food containing fiber and a “Mediterranean-type” diets rich in fruits and vegetables that reduce the risk of weight gain, overweight and obesity. Conversely, sugar-sweetened drinks, fast foods and a “Western type” diet rich in meats and energy-dense proteins are strongly linked to increased weight gain, overweight and obesity.

The Report also points to the evidence that greater screen time is a cause of weight gain, overweight and obesity in children. This is particularly relevant in light of the Lancet study that discussed the onset of cancer at an early age, since children with overweight and obesity are likely to turn into young adults in a similar status. There is enormous opportunity to prevent future cancer cases, if changes can be made to stop and reverse the current trend of increasing overweight and obesity. In addition to helping individuals learn about healthy lifestyle choices, community and national policies play a crucial role in creating living spaces more conducive to physical activity and healthier food choices.

AICR is urging Congress and federal agencies to improve funding for cancer prevention research, ensure that federal nutrition and physical activity guidelines reflect the latest research regarding cancer risk, improve nutrition labeling and improve access to lifestyle interventions.
