Suisun Valley, Fairfield

Story by Susan Hiland provided by Daily Republic

Suisun Valley greeted a group of out-of-town travel writers with a bounty of beauty, food and wine over the weekend.

They toured just about every winery, olive oil factory, candy-making company and barley brew-maker in the area.

This was the result of the Fairfield Conference & Visitors Bureau reaching out to Geiger & Associates, which has put together these travel tours for several communities including Lodi.

“This is the first time we have done something like this,” said Anand Patel, president/CEO of Visit Fairfield. “The goal was to get people thinking about Fairfield and Suisun Valley.”

He said he hoped that the travel writers would see the beauty of the valley and share that with their readers. The writers came from Portland, Oregon, Southern California, Northern California and even Quebec, Canada.

“We hope people read their articles and get interested in the valley,” he said.

The group of writers included Susan G. Hauser, Elyse Glickman, Vaughn Lowery, Wendy van Diver, Cortney Erndt, Carla Waldemar, Ruksana Hussain, Wendy Lemlin, Janet Boileau and Robin Raven.

The writers arrived Thursday and enjoyed an afternoon at Jelly Belly Candy Co., where they took the tour, sampled sweet treats and shopped.

“Every single stop we hope they learn something new,” Patel said.

Boileau, a writer and publisher for Taste and Travel International Magazine, which is a culinary publication with 20,000 subscribers across Canada, had no idea about Suisun Valley.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “But this is a very impressive part of the wine country.”

She was enjoying how relaxing the area was with some wine from Suisun Valley Wine Co-op along Pleasants Valley Road. The stop offered an opportunity for everyone to sample a variety of wines from the area in one place.

Lowery is the president of 360 Magazine, a lifestyle magazine that goes out to thousands of subscribers from Los Angeles to Japan.

“Anyone visiting here needs to stop at Il Fiorello Olive Oil Co.,” he said. “It was a sensory overload.”

They sampled a meal with each of the foods having been created using produce from the company’s garden.

“This is a great cross of Napa and Sonoma,” Lowery said. “It’s a place you can take time out and is very drivable.”

He said he was envisioning himself returning with a convertible, rolling the top down and just cruising through the back roads as a vacation.

“We tasted the grapes at Wooden Valley Winery. They were so sweet, I thought no way that was real,” he said.

“Fairfield is just a great town for a great road trip,” he said.

Damon Elliot “Grown Tingz”

Grammy-winning producer Damon Elliott is returning as solo-recording artist NomaD with new release Grown Tingz on NomaD Crew/Mensch House Records out September 28 at all digital outlets.  Grown Tingz was inspired by life challenges and breaking through it all, and features a stellar line-up of reggae, soul and mainstream artists including Fiji, Eli Mac, Hirie, Josh Tatofi & Maoli, Chardonnay, Morgan Heritage, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Mya among others

“Grown Tingz was inspired by life, growing up and the challenges that we all face when we become adults – fear, anger, self-doubt, a heart attack, insecurity and so on. When you finally have your breakthrough and you get that feeling of knowing that you are all grown – that what Grown Tingz is all about”

Elliott, who was nominated for “Best Break Out Artist” this year for iHeart Radio’s inaugural “Island Music Awards,” reinvented himself as NomaD in 2016 after suffering a heart attack. The health scare prompted his move from LA to Hawaii after realizing his true calling: to awaken others through music. He founded his label NomaD Crew, signing legendary Fijian Reggae artist George “Fiji” Veikoso, pioneer of the Pacific Island sound, who helped break NomaD’s first single “Take It All” as producer.  “Take It All” hit #1 on iHeart Radio’s Island 98.5 and 93.1’s Da Pa’lna for four consecutive weeks and maintained a top 5 spot for several more weeks.

NomaD’s single “Perfect Timing” off Grown Tingz is among the most requested songs on Island 98.5’s Top 5 at 5.

All songs on Grown Tingz were mixed by Damon Elliott at NomaD Crew Studios in Honolulu, HI. All songs were mastered by Andy Kravitz at Studio 4 West Recording in Venice Beach, CA.

Bryan Mitchell Goes 8.2 Innings, Gets Win

By Reid Urban

Bryan Mitchell is making his case to be in the Padres rotation come 2019, and Monday night in SF was probably his best case yet.

Mitchell came close to securing his first shutout of the season, but settled for 8.2 innings of work as the Padres shut out the Giants 5-0 on Monday night at AT&T Park.

Despite the disappointing season as a whole for Mitchell, he has been pretty impressive in his last few games, and that could be enough for him to secure his place heading into next spring. He would still have to compete with a bunch of other starters for a spot in the rotation.

Despite that, though, he had some arm trouble, posting a 7.08 ERA before doing on the disabled list in early June with elbow impingement. Tonight was an example of Mitchell when he is great. He went after the strike zone and regularly threw 94-95 mph fastballs regularly in the later stages of the game.

The Padres were hoping for this when they acquired him from the Yankees last offseason. Though it didn’t work out at first, the long wait seems to be paying off.

Jimmy Butler Trade Request

By Reid Urban

Timberwolves guard Jimmy Butler could be out of Minnesota sooner than expected.

The All-Star has requested a trade, according to The Athletic. This comes just one year after Minnesota traded Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn, and a draft pick that became Lauri Markkanen, to the Chicago Bulls, to get the star guard. Now, it seems that the relationship between head coach and president Tom Thibodeau and star Karl-Anthony Towns has gone downhill with no hopes of repairing it.

Butler had initially tried to set up a meeting with Thibodeau to get this straightened out, but with the latest news, it seems either the meeting didn’t go so well or there was no meeting at all.

Until Butler showed up last season, the Timberwolves hadn’t made the playoffs since the Kevin Garnett years. Last season, they went out early in the first round to the Houston Rockets. Now, it looks like Butler will pack up his bags and try to go elsewhere.

The three teams that Butler would look to be traded too are the Brooklyn Nets, LA Clippers, and New York Knicks. All of these teams have the salary cap capacity to bring Butler aboard, though it remains to be seen if Thibodeau and the Wolves will agree to deal him to any of those teams.

The Wolves would certainly like to keep him onboard for one more season and see if they can make it farther this time around. However, based on what we know so far and his pending free agency after this season, the Wolves would like to get something in return instead of just letting him walk when that time comes.
