Princeton University’s Vertical Farming Project

New Vertical Farming Initiative will Provide Cutting Edge Scientific Educational Opportunities for Elementary Students and Enhance School Farm to Cafeteria Program

As Spring weather FINALLY arrives on the East Coast and gardeners and farmers eagerly await the planting season, Hopewell Elementary School Students in New Jersey have been enjoying fresh, organic produce they grow indoor all year

Princeton, NJ: Princeton University’s Vertical Farming Project announced they will partner with Hopewell Elementary School in Hopewell, New Jersey to develop their vertical farm-to-cafeteria program.

Fifth grade teacher at Hopewell Elementary, Helen Corveleyn oversees the school’s outdoor garden beds, six indoor vertical hydroponics towers and has been instrumental in their new vertical farming initiative partnership with Princeton. Corveleyn will work closely with Princeton University’s Dr. Paul Gauthier, founder and director of the Princeton Vertical Farming Project to develop the program at the elementary school. The on-site, indoor classroom will be fully functioning in September 2018 and will allow preschool through fifth grade kids to mirror Princeton’s program while providing kids with fresh, organic produce for lunch and an invaluable introduction to hands on, cutting edge scientific development.

The Princeton Vertical Farming Project focuses on the sustainability and energy efficiency of vertical farming as they study production rates of hydroponic engineering systems along with marketing and economic feasibility. Gauthier says, “Two of the main challenges that vertical farms are facing revolve around awareness and data sharing. Through establishing a resonant collaboration with the Hopewell Elementary School, the Princeton Vertical Farming Project hopes to educate new generations about the benefits of vertical farming, and to inspire them to expand their knowledge through the application of new, groundbreaking research and technologies, which the farm has been producing. Furthermore, this collaboration will create citizen science datasets, which  will contribute to the improvement of the vertical farming field as a whole. By inspiring students today, we hope to shape the future of farming and reduce human impacts on the environment.”

Elementary students and teachers have embraced the homemade, nutritious lunch options infused with organic ingredients served in Hopewell Elementary’s cafeteria. Their community is excited for the new vertical farming initiative with the goal of featuring 100% of the lettuce in the cafeteria grown at the school. Additional vegetables and herbs will be grown, harvested and featured as well. Principal David Friedrich’s passion for locally sourced, homemade, organic food for his students is evident in the Organic Menu offered at Hopewell. The menu is now in its third year and has seen a 50% increase in participation from the start. Principal Friedrich says, “At Hopewell Elementary School, we are thrilled to expand the vertical farming initiative which reinforces our commitment to sustainability. As the first public school in New Jersey to offer an organic menu featuring homemade entrees, we will now be able to prepare more nutritious meals infused with our own vegetables and herbs grown and harvested by students. The project also supports hands-on, relevant and high-quality science instruction aligned to Next Generation Science Standards.”

Dr. Thomas Smith, Superintendent of Schools, remarked, “Lead by Mrs. Corveleyn and Principal David Friedrich, the Hopewell Elementary School has been a driving force in our district-wide sustainability efforts. The vertical farming project has captivated the interest of students and staff. By bridging the gap between science and nature, students can observe the real-life connection between farming and food by seeing what is necessary to grow and produce the food we eat. An important part of this project is that virtually all of the food grown in the vertical farm will be used in our school lunches.”

Children respond to living organisms in the classroom with excitement and passion. Typically in an elementary setting, animals and insects are a wonderful way to promote living organism studies, but at Hopewell Elementary School, they have captured a unique Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)–aligned curriculum that is plant-based and integrates both life science and chemistry. Corveleyn remarks, “No child is too young to understand hydroponics. The bottom line is, kids love planting something they know they can eat! Creating an opportunity for sustainable gardening for the future at a young age makes hydroponics not just a buzzword, but a way of life.”

Hopewell Elementary secured several grants to sustain the vertical farming project:

Sustainable Jersey / New Jersey Education Association ($10,000)

BASF Corporation ($5,000)

Hopewell Valley Education Foundation ($4,400)

Hopewell Elementary School PTO ($7,000)

Lewis Hamilton Talks Travel Do’s and Don’ts

Ahead of the F1 Grand Prix race in Monaco this weekend, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport driver Lewis Hamilton discusses the sport and reveals his travel secrets and guilty pleasures when on the road.

In a film released today, the four-time Formula One™ World Champion also reflects on first-race excitement, winning four world titles, facing the 2018 race season head-on, memorable circuits and meeting fans across the world. Through the Marriott Rewards® and SPG® loyalty programmes, fans can also get the chance to meet Lewis Hamilton as well as some of the world’s top athletes, musicians and chefs.

Speaking on film, the frequent flier gives the inside track on taking advantage of those hours buckled in to your seat; don a pair of high quality headphones and lose yourself in your favourite playlist; a good book helps wile away the time and will send you to the land of nod so you arrive at your destination energised. If in-flight movies are more your style, treat yourself to a little chocolate (not too much) and for max-comfort, throw a fresh t-shirt and pair of sweat pants into your carry-on bag.

But what’s that one essential Hamilton recommends you should never leave home without? Hand sanitising wipes. The meticulous traveller recommends giving the seat area a good wipe down first. You never know who was in that seat before you!

Hamilton also shares exclusive insights into his holiday habits. When not travelling for races Lewis leaves the trainers at home. It’s summer sun, flip-flops, a pair of shorts (never speedos) and a city-beach destination like Los Angeles for some guaranteed rays. Lewis’ first ever holiday was Ibiza with his family, and that was where he first drove a go-kart… the rest was history!

Right now however, his thoughts are firmly on Monaco this weekend. “You never know how you’re going to feel when you wake up on a Sunday morning. Every Sunday of my life racing-wise has been different, so I’m excited about that.”

‪Nine Inch Nails Physical World Presale Events

LISTENING STATIONS DEBUTED TWO ADDITIONAL SONGS FROM

BAD WITCH, OUT JUNE 22

COLD AND BLACK AND INFINITE NORTH AMERICA 2018 TOUR

STARTS SEPTEMBER 13

@nineinchnails Wow. NIN fans are the fucking best. Humbled by the massive turnout today. THANK YOU for trying something different with us. We cannot wait to see you in the fall.

Tens of thousands of people descended on venues across North America as Nine Inch Nails tried a different approach to getting tour tickets directly into the hands of their fans. Taking place in fourteen cities, fans who waited in line at The Physical World presale events had first shot at the best seats for COLD AND BLACK AND INFINITE NORTH AMERICA 2018.

Lines were long at The Physical World presales often wrapping multiple times around city blocks but fans made the most of their time as they connected with other like-minded individuals. A locked box in each city contained a NIN listening station playing 2 new songs at loud volume on a loop, giving Ahead of Ourselves and Play the Goddamned Part their world debut.

Limited edition presale t-shirts and lithographs, customized for each venue, were available to the fans who made the effort to show up. Local businesses got involved, with Alamo Drafthouse in Dallas creating a custom Nine Inch Nails menu for the day and Chicago coffee roaster Dark Matter delivering a custom blend to the throng of fans outside the Aragon Ballroom. The events had their challenges, and venue and promoter staff worked closely with the band to resolve issues as they came up.

Trent Reznor says:

We’re playing a limited amount of shows in a more intimate setting this time around, and we thought we’d try something different regarding ticketing. Our goals wasn’t simply to combat scalping and resellers, but to turn the process into a communal activity. Although not without hiccups (we underestimated the turnout – Jesus!), it was incredibly rewarding to see actual fans getting great seats at face value and experience something together. We are very much looking forward to the shows – thank you as always for your support! #NINOnTour

@rogershepard 8 hours later, Row 4 for #NINONTOUR #Boston – humanity restored

@LTamasfi This #ninontour #nineinchnails event was amazing! We hang out all night, out tickets that came with a beautiful display envelope, I picked up a pre-sale limited edition lithograph, an event only t shirt, and got to listen to 2 unreleased tracks from the incoming album!

@blackcelebrantt You can only imagine the success we felt after waiting 6 hours. Last batch of VIP tickets in hand!

@earlypaintbrush Itߣs like the 90s but with less hair and more phones

@YogiJoshKenobi Aaaaaannnddd we got tix!!! waited in line for 2 hours, but worth it!haha and no fees too!!!

@trent_reznorߣs sinister plan succeeded after all

@StuntmanSeth We met some cool folks in line. And the staff was providing drinks and stuff. Much better than fighting with bots online getting nosebleeds

Instagram user Jennaxarkansas: Totally worth all of this. 4th row.

@LexiNicole85 Thank you @nineinchnails @trent_reznor for giving us an experience today. I had human interactions and met some awesome people! From the merch table to listening area of album. Everyone kept talking about how it reminded them of good ole days

@NannyNouvelle Scalper showed up, bought $500 in tix. Turned around and tried to sell GA $300 a ticket. Got hauled off immediately.

Reddit user TheJVR: Like most of you, I went to the venue nervous; not knowing what to expect, not knowing if I’d get tickets for sure…We were there for 4 1/2 hours, but the time flew by. I’d been planning to see this show alone (my wife isn’t interested), but me and two of the other guys ended up buying seats next each other for the same night (the seats in the section I wanted!). I’m no longer going alone. It’s my first show, so I’m excited to have company.

Instagram user Girlswannabeher: After 10 hours of waiting, standing in the rain and having endless conversations about this music and the gift if has brought to so many, these are mine. It was an incredible day to talk to so many strangers learn about their lives and share pieces of mine. Many of these people I would have never crossed paths with otherwise. The human experience is alive and well, the requirement isnߣt money or status, it is a desire to participate.

@wolves_lower: Yo Trent Reznor pulled the biggest trick of all and actually forced me to talk to total strangers.

A Jovial Jashn

Superheroes walking the corridors, live art performances, a car show, and a DJ night. What sounds like a unforgettable music festival was the star attraction of the Dubai International Academic City where its annual event titled Jashn was celebrated. Literally translating to ‘celebration’, JASHN 2018 stepped up to the occasion by centering on a theme that seemed to be at the tip of everyone’s tongue-comic books and movies. The Dubai Campus of BITS Pilani raised the bar once again by setting up one of the most elaborate stages in the region inviting the best to showcase their skills. And with the atmosphere of Marvel and DC to drive the festivities, the event proved to be a great crowd-puller for students and teens. The inaugural ceremony occurred on the 16th of April and was marked by a musical evening by the musicians of the campus followed by a stage play round and a fashion show by the group called Drape. To conclude the evening in a round of laughter and splits, popular Indian comic Biswa Kalyan took to the stage and left the audience wanting for more.

The second day for was an energetic extension with further competitions defined by quizzes, musicals, musical battles and a lot more. The next day attracted a great crowd for the detective themed scavenge hunt titled ‘CSI’ followed by instrumental competitions, dancing doubles, a fashion show round and a guest performance by the artist Rooh. All the while, the crowd outside were being entertained by a high octane road show featuring the best cars. But the level had to be raised further as the campus closed the event with a awe-inspiring round of competitions attracting students with an artistic touch with a solo stage play round, a poetry slam competition, a group dance show off and finally a DJ performance by the duo Sunburn- Siana Caherine and Zephyrtone.

JASHN 2018 La Comic Fiesta had achieved the same mass appeal of the very comic brands it endorsed and plans on scaling new heights with the coming years.

Emotional Eating Contributing to Your Prediabetes?

Here Are Eight ADA-Approved Techniques to Break This Dangerous Habit

If you’ve got prediabetes, it’s time to adopt healthier eating habits. But emotional eating is one habit that could derail your progress and put you further at risk. Jill Weisenberger, author of Prediabetes: A Complete Guide, offers tips to help you stop emotional eating today.

Arlington, VA (May 2018)—If you’ve been diagnosed with prediabetes or have been told that you’re at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, you already know you’ve got to change your eating habits. But overhauling your diet is anything but easy—especially when you’re feeling hurt, sad, mad, lonely, or aggravated. If you turn to food when you’re stressed or unhappy, you could be damaging your health with emotional eating.

“Plenty of people who try to adopt healthier eating habits often find themselves waylaid by emotional eating,” says Jill Weisenberger, who partnered with the American Diabetes Association to write Prediabetes: A Complete Guide: Your Lifestyle Reset to Stop Prediabetes and Other Chronic Illnesses (American Diabetes Association, May 2018, ISBN: 978-1-580-40674-1, $16.95). “Digging into a carton of ice cream or bag of chips when you’re feeling down can quickly derail your health goals. And for the 84 million American adults with prediabetes, emotional eating can be especially dangerous to your health.”

Weisenberger says it can be hard to break the habit of emotional eating, because psychology and biology are both at play. People reach for “feel-good” foods like Mom’s cookies or a cheesy casserole. Additionally, stress hormones crank up the appetite, and eating releases the brain’s feel-good chemicals. Often, a psychotherapist skilled in working with people with disordered eating is the ideal person to help you. Ask your healthcare provider for a referral if you think a psychotherapist can help you.

Despite these challenges, you can learn to stop emotional eating with practice and diligence. Are you ready to break free of emotional eating and move one step closer to reclaiming your health? Here are a few techniques that may help you on your journey.

Keep a log. Record your food intake for a week or two. Track what you’re eating along with your mood. This process may help you find choice points in which you can learn to change your thinking and behavior and teach you to identify your breaking points long before you break.

“Consider keeping a photo log,” suggests Weisenberger. “If you’re about to eat, snap a picture. Do this for a week to see in color the choices you’ve been making.”

Notice and label your emotions. Having negative emotions isn’t usually bad. In fact, having negative emotions is actually normal. But taking a deep dive into a bag of salty, crunchy snacks because of negative emotions is unhelpful in the long run.

“Practice noticing and labeling your emotions,” says Weisenberger. “Are you sad, anxious, lonely, or mad? Naming them and observing them without judgment will help you learn about them. Many people find that journaling about their emotions is helpful.”

Imagine handling emotional situations. In your mind, practice responding to common triggers in ways that don’t lead you to overeating. Think about what you can do next time you feel overwhelmed with household chores or the next time you argue with your spouse or whatever situation leads you to eat emotionally. Over and over in your mind, practice acting in desirable ways. “Here again,” says Weisenberger, “many people find journaling enlightening and empowering.”

Create a plan. After imagining responding in positive ways, create a plan for difficult situations. If you need distractions, gather things to help you, such as puzzle books, adult coloring books, nail polish, a list of people to call, or a list of activities such as soaking in a bath or playing with your dog.

“If you know that exercise or meditation help you cope with strong emotions, plan to take at least five minutes for meditation or exercise,” says Weisenberger. “You may need more than one plan to address various situations.”

Practice non-food coping skills. Regularly soothe yourself without calories. Every day, take time for soothing enjoyment, so when the time comes, you have an arsenal of coping strategies at the ready. Some ideas include taking deep-breathing breaks, using adult coloring books, writing in a journal, listening to soothing or uplifting music, chatting with a friend, buying yourself flowers, or soaking in a hot tub.

“I regularly play with my dog, Benny, a perpetual puppy,” says Weisenberger. “I also call and text my daughters, spend quiet time drinking tea or coffee with my husband, take five-minute breaks outside, and sit alone sipping a warm and fragrant tea from a beautiful cup. How you choose to soothe yourself is as individual as you are.”

Adopt a morning ritual. A morning ritual potentially has the power to affect your entire day. A ritual is different from a routine in that a ritual holds a deeper meaning. A few examples are:

• Express gratitude in thoughts, a journal, or aloud.

• Reaffirm your goals in writing or aloud.

• Practice yoga, meditation, or prayer.

• Watch a sunrise.

• Visualize good things happening in your day.

• Recite affirmations or a mantra.

Build in food treats. Whatever food you reach for in times of stress probably has some special meaning to you. Is it chocolate, macaroni and cheese, pizza, or hot-from-the-oven cookies? Whatever it is, be sure to have some now and then. Not as a reward, but simply because you like the way it tastes. Practice enjoying this favorite food in a reasonable amount, perhaps as part of a balanced meal. Simply removing a food’s taboo label can be helpful. In this way, you are learning that it’s okay to treat yourself and removing the notion of treats as cheats. We all deserve treats, but cheat days are the wrong mindset.

Create a personal wellness vision and review it often. A personal wellness vision is a concrete and motivating picture of you being healthy, feeling healthy, and living a healthful life. Imagine yourself at your ideal level of well-being. How do you feel? Look? Act? Write down what this looks like for you. This vision will help you identify what is important to you.

“After creating your vision, be sure to regularly look it over! It’s easy to forget what really matters when you’re under stress or running in crisis mode. But knowing—and remembering—what’s really important steers you to appropriate actions.”

“Reaching for food to manage your emotions can be a very hard habit to break,” concludes Weisenberger. “Become aware of times when you look to food to soothe you, calm you down, or help you avoid your feelings. When you recognize that you’ve been eating with your emotions, you can change the behavior and continue striving toward your health goals.”

Tourism to Turkey

NEW YORK (May 22, 2018) – Tourism to Turkey increased by 50.56 percent in the first quarter of 2018, with a total of 7,263,807 visitors between January and March, according to official figures released by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The tourism growth coincides with the start of the Year of Troy 2018, which celebrates the 20thanniversary of the archaeological site’s listing on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. As part of the Year of Troy, a calendar of cultural and sporting initiatives will be held throughout the year, including the International Trojan Food Festival-Çanakkale in June and the Trojan Horse Short Film Festival in October.

In support of The Year of Troy, Turkish Airlines launched a “Troia”-themed aircraft. The A321-type aircraft is specially designed with a livery of the Trojan Horse, made famous in Homer’s account of the Trojan War in the epic, Iliad.

Other cultural and tourism highlights from Turkey include:

HERITAGE

  • Following an eight-year restoration project, the 1,600-year-old Theodosius Cistern officially opened to the public in April. The Cistern is believed to date to the reign of the Byzantine emperor Theodosius II and formed part of a 250 km-long system which brought fresh water to the ancient city. Located in Istanbul’s Çemberlitaş neighborhood, the fifth century structure will periodically host art exhibitions and other cultural events.
  • Twelve pieces of the world-famous Zeugma mosaics are to be returned to Turkey, following the signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey and Ohio’s Bowling Green State University. The pieces, forming part of the frame for the infamous “Gypsy Girl” panel, have been held by the university since 1965. On their return, they will be exhibited at the Zeugma Mosaic Museum in Gaziantep.

TOURISM

  • The Ministry of Finance announced incentives to boost medical tourism in Turkey, with the aim to bring 1.5 million health tourism visitors to the country by 2023. Incentives include new investment subsidies and value-added tax (VAT) exemptions for non-resident foreigners using medical institutes accredited by the Ministry of Health.

  • Istanbul Modern, Turkey’s leading contemporary art museum, will move to a new location on Istanbul’s historic waterfront. Designed by the celebrated Italian architect Renzo Piano, the three-year construction project is part of the city’s initiative to restore cultural and historic sites in the Galataport district. The Istanbul Modern will temporarily move to the Union Française building until construction is complete.

HOSPITALITY

  • The first Six Senses resort in Turkey opened on May 1 in Kaplankaya. On the banks of the Aegean Sea, Six Senses Kaplankaya includes 141 guestrooms, six suites and 66 private villas. The hotel’s secluded location offers a range of activities, such as watersports, hiking and nature trails, and cultural experiences. State-of-the-art spa facilities incorporate high-tech science with high-touch therapies, providing a range of pioneering health and wellness regimens.
  • The Galata Istanbul Hotel – MGallery by Sofitel recently opened its doors. The new luxury establishment boasts 83 different rooms and suites, as well as a selection of bars, restaurants and spa facilities, including a traditional Turkish Hammam.
  • EDITION Hotels is launching its new hotel in Bodrum. Overlooking the Aegean Sea, the Bodrum EDITION offers 102 rooms, suites and villas. Facilities include an infinity pool, garden lounge, night club, Turkish Hammam and fitness center. Food options will include an all-day casual dining venue, two bars and a gourmet specialty grill.

GASTRONOMY AND NIGHTLIFE

  • Istanbul’s newly renovated Ulus 29 restaurant reopened in April. An eclectic menu, blending traditional Turkish cuisine with international food trends, makes this stylish restaurant and bar popular with both locals and visitors with views over the Bosporus.
  • The recently-opened MSA Restaurant can be found in Istanbul’s Sakip Sabanci Museum. Owned by the Culinary Arts Academy of Istanbul, instructor chefs and students provide an extensive menu, ranging from local Istanbul street food and Turkish cuisine to popular international dishes.

  • The Populist has recently opened a new branch at Bebek Mahallesi, Neşe Sokak, No: 1. Dating back to 1890, the craft brewery and restaurant remains a firm favorite with locals and tourists alike. Spread over three floors, the décor comprises a unique blend of prohibition-era USA with modern day Istanbul.

  • Rana by Topaz is a new restaurant in the up-and-coming Gümüşsuyu area. The causal tavern-style feel offers a comfortable dining experience, while the ambitious menu combines international and Turkish cuisine.
  • Inspired by the Rolling Stones’ song, Angie is an intimate bar located in Istanbul’s trendy Bebek neighborhood. Offering both live music and DJ performances, its classic feel brings a new dimension to Istanbul’s eclectic nightlife.

  • Hypnos Hall is a new addition to Istanbul’s electronic music scene. The venue will host international DJs and producers, as well as featuring artistic and visual shows.

  • The Ruby night club has recently opened its doors, providing a glamorous nighttime experience in Istanbul. The restaurant boasts a unique range of Turkish and Japanese dishes, to be enjoyed on the garden terrace with panoramic views of the Bosporus. The Ruby’s nightclubs stay open until the early hours, offering both live music and DJ performances with selection of award-winning cocktails.
