About Spencer Makenzie’s Fish Company

Originally founded in 2007 by John Karayan and his wife Jennifer as a festival concession, the Karayan’s named their award-winning restaurant after their two children – their son Spencer and their daughter Makenzie. With the goal of offering fresh, healthful food at consumer friendly prices, its reputation was quickly established at such popular Ventura events as the Ventura County Fair, the Aloha Festival and the C Street Long Board Classic.

During that time, they perfected such signature dishes as Clam Chowder, Shrimp & Fish Ceviche and Giant Fish Tacos into unique recipes that provide a tastier, healthier and delicious alternative to typical “Fast Food”.  Everything is made to order, they only use sushi grade fish, produce is purchased from local vendors and 100% of their famous sauces are homemade.

Along with health consciousness, Spencer Makenzie’s makes going “Green” a priority. All of the cooking oil they use is 0 Trans fat and is repurposed as biodiesel for vehicles.  They use environmental products and recycle whenever possible.

About Cornhole

Cornhole or Corn Toss is similar to horseshoes except that you use wooden boxes called cornhole platforms and corn bags instead of horseshoes and metal stakes.  Contestants take turns pitching their corn bags at the inclined platform until a contestant reaches the score of 21 points.  A corn bag in the hole scores 3 points, while one on the platform scores 1 point.  Scoring can be swift and the lead may change hands several times in a match before the winner is decided.  The game is generally played tournament style with an individual or team being named the champion at the end of the tournament.

Thought to have originated in Germany in the 14th Century, the game surfaced in the Ohio Valley in the 19th Century.  Also known as corn toss, bean toss, dummy boards, doghouse, soft horseshoes and Baggo, cornhole became widely played at tailgate events, contributing to its nationwide popularity.

Smock Me

By: Carley Schumann

This week, Style Fashion Week visited the West Hollywood studio of emerging designer, Michael Howard—the creative mind behind Smock Me.

Entering the studio, we were immediately greeted by Michael’s mischievous pig, Mr. Meat, who has become the inspiration behind of some of Smock Me’s upcoming designs. Mr. Meat, the SmockMe pig, has a wardrobe of his own and changes his hair color frequently—check out his Instagram. He definitely takes after his father.

As we talked, I sifted through the many unique designs draped amongst the racks, when one particular jacket caught my eye. The back read, “Fear is Fuel for the Soul.” He walked me outside of his studio to reveal the mantra painted on the wall as well. “I came here with nothing but my backpack.” He explained.

It was eight years ago, after losing both of his parents, that he decided that it was time to immerse himself in a new environment. He packed his backpack, and left for Los Angeles without a plan. He explained how the fear of the unknown propelled him forward on his journey. Without a place to stay, he ran into a friend on his first day in town, who gave him a temporary home as he established himself in his new surroundings. He experimented in acting, but when it failed to inspire him, he began working and designing for a shop on Melrose. He additionally began teaching himself to sew.

Growing up in the Brooklyn 90’s, Michael has always found inspiration in brands like Iceberg and Coogi. He also finds inspiration in vintage cartoons like Rocco’s Modern Life, CatDog and others that bring his audience feelings childhood nostalgia. Fashion and the expression of dress was always something he admired—specifically, unique pieces that couldn’t be replicated. He was never interested in fashion that felt like something “everyone else was wearing.”

It was three years ago when he designed his first piece. The garment was a second hand jean jacket, which he distressed and customized by attaching some 1930’s Pop-Eye characters from his collection. He placed the jacket in the Melrose storefront where he was working. When almost immediately, a customer recognized the value and uniqueness of the garment, Michael knew he was onto something. He began designing more distinct pieces for himself and his friends, and when they continued to receive a tremendous amount of attention when wearing the garments, Smock Me was born.

Michael takes pride in the originality of each garment. Each piece is a reflection of the emotion and inspiration that was flowing within him on the moment of creation. While these core pieces can never be replicated, he has begun to incorporate graphic design into his collections. He intends for the Smock Me graphic collection to be similar in exclusivity to his core designs—once released, there will be only a limited amount of each graphic collection available. His first graphic collection will debut during Style Fashion Week Palm Springs.

On April 6th at the Palm Springs Air Museum, guests can look forward to a collection launch which will include Smock Me core, graphic, swim and accessories. Smock Me presented his first collective during New York Fashion Week this past February. This will be his first time showing with Style Fashion Week.

Michael continues to let the unknown guide him in all of his endeavors, creating each moment with the stroke of his brush and letting his intuition lead the way. We look forward to his collection debut at Style Fashion Week, Palm Springs.

Cullinan Final Challenge

Three years after the beginning of a gruelling testing programme that has seen it conquer every corner of the globe from freezing snowfields to searing deserts, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan will undertake The Final Challenge to prove itself Effortless Everywhere in the public eye. In an unprecedented partnership, Rolls-Royce and National Geographic will work together to publish daily film and photograph updates as Cullinan undertakes trials in Northern Europe, the Middle East and the United States for a final time ahead of its world debut later this year.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan will embody all the values and capabilities that drove Rolls-Royce’s two founding fathers, the Honourable Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce, to secure the marque’s reputation early last century, as they took top honours in rigorous public adventures such as the Scottish Reliability Trials, the London to Edinburgh event and the Alpine Trials.

The Final Challenge will begin in the Highlands of Scotland on Wednesday 4 April and will be broadcast on social media by National Geographic and Rolls-Royce as it continues its adventure through the Alpine snowfields of Austria, the arid deserts of the Middle East and finally across the toughest terrain in the United States. These will include multiple off-road challenges and miles of rough terrain.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan and crew will be accompanied on The Final Challenge by acclaimed explorer and photographer Cory Richards, National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year in 2012. The National Geographic team will document the journey with daily updates broadcast from the spectacular, far-flung locations he and the crew encounter.

“I promised the public three years ago that I would involve them in the development and testing of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and I continue to keep that promise by making The Final Challenge, a public trial,” comments Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce. “Today’s public and customers will see Rolls-Royce in a wholly new light as Cullinan demonstrates just how capable a Rolls-Royce can be. And in a few short months, our customers will be able to experience this capability for themselves as they get behind the wheel of this truly compelling Rolls-Royce that is Effortless, Everywhere.”

HBCU 2nd Annual Day

Every year, HBCUs fall lower on the United States Congress’ list of priorities. In turn, the outcry commences from current students and alumni of these institutions. On April 17, 2018, HBCU Collective will host it’s 2nd Annual Day of Action on Capitol Hill with fellow HBCU students, alumni, and supporters who are concerned with preserving the legacy and future of historically black institutions.

During the day of action, HBCU Collective and its advocates are prepared to ask state and federal legislators for additional funding and assistance for facility upgrades, an increase in financial support for students, and funding for federal research grants. These call to actions, along with student-scheduled meetings with legislators, put HBCUs back on the forefront as we fight to protect the legacy and opportunities that HBCUs provide. In addition, there will be a formal press conference directly behind the U.S. Capitol.

Founder, Robert Stephens, is anticipating the 2nd Annual Day of Action. He quotes, “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. It is time to organize, determine where we can exert pressure, and push until our schools and students have an equitable distribution of resources.

This will be an empowering day for all attendees, regardless of age, color, and institution attended. Come for the experience and leave armed with tools to continue advocating for the support of HBCUs.
