TOP TREKS FOR THE EXPERIENTIAL TRAVELER

• Pygmy Forest – From Jug Handle State Beach, step back through time as you hike the 2.5-mile self-guided nature trail called The Ecological Staircase, which explores five ocean terraces (each representing 100,000 years) that have been uplifted over time and have created this unique coastal range.  Visitors can take a walkabout in the local gardens or bed down for a deal at Jug Handle Creek Farm, a European-style hostel for just $45/night; http://www.jughandlecreekfarm.org/nature-education/ecological-staircase/.

• Bowling Ball Beach – Rows of boulders carved by time and tide await at Bowling Ball Beach. Hidden, like the Terracotta Army, at low tide these concretions reveal themselves once the sea has retreated. The beach is part of Schooner Gulch State Beach, free; www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=446.

• City of 10,000 Buddhas – Peacocks, pagodas and “Vigor” and “Virtue” signposts — backed with the resonance of chanting monks – this is the stop for a peaceful walkabout at one of the nation’s largest Buddhist monasteries.  Open to the public, this stunning City of 10,000 Buddhas offers daily prayer (12:30 p.m.) in the eye-popping Jeweled Hall, complete with 10,000 golden Buddhas lining the facility from floor to ceiling; free.  Stay for a tasty lunch at Jyuan Kang Vegetarian Restaurant on-site. www.cttbusa.org.

• Solar Living Institute/Memorial Car Grove – A scout about the Memorial Car Grove at the Solar Living Institute in Hopland is certain to spur a selfie.  Tucked along the Inspiration Highway (101) at the gateway of Mendocino County, this oddity takes shape in the form of hulking gas guzzlers, including classic Edsels repurposed as art.  These rusting relics from the 1950s and ’60s with grown trees sprouting from the interiors are a statement to our times.   Get up close and personal with a grinning grille or hug that tree.  Free; www.solarlivinginstitute.org.

• DIY Point Arena-Stornetta Lands Hike – Relish the wild outdoors at the only land-based portion of the 1,100-mile California Coastal National Monument: Point Arena-Stornetta Lands. The newly acquired lands and moody bluffs of Mendocino’s coast — incorporating more than 1,600 acres — give hikers new access to a 12-mile stretch of coastline laced with cypress forests, scenic cliffs and wildflower fields.  Free; http://www.visitmendocino.com/point-arena-stornetta-public-lands/.

• Point Arena Lighthouse – Make a day of scouting the coast with a pit stop at Point Arena Lighthouse.  The tower is the only West Coast lighthouse of significant height (115 feet) that visitors can access all the way to the top. Breathtaking 360-degree views and a museum and shop await.  Six lodgings dot the 23-acre property including the romantic Lighthouse Keeper’s Apartment ($200/dbl.). General admission $7/children 11 and under $1; www.pointarenalighthouse.com.

• Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens — Work up a thirst while touring one of the few botanical gardens located directly on prime Pacific Ocean frontage. • Glass Beach – An anomaly that is eye-popping, visitors can seek out sea glass on Fort Bragg’s unique trash-to-treasure state beach. Formerly the city dump, Glass Beach has evolved over tide and time polishing the glass from head- and tail-lights, jars, bottles, and more into tiny, colorful glass pebbles.  Red and blue are the rarest! Free; www.visitmendocino.com/does-glass-beach-really-have-glass.

• Roots of Motive Power – The age of steam is alive and on show in Willits, California. Just east of town off the Inspiration Highway (101), Roots of Motive Power shows off its cache of classic steam engines, donkeys and railroad track to visitors on their work days each month, free; www.rootsofmotivepower.com/work-days.

• Orr Hot Springs – Soak up some relaxation at this clothing-optional outpost nestled in the rolling hills near the town of Ukiah. Reservations required; www.orrhotsprings.org.

• Montgomery Wo0ds State Reserve – Near Orr Hot Springs lies one of the state’s most magnificent groves of virgin redwoods. To stand among the redwood spires deep in the forest is to stand in the nave of one of nature’s cathedrals. High up in the canopy, past flying buttresses of enormous branches, the green treetops soar 300 or more feet above.  A network of easy trails links the Reserve and adjoining fern groves.  Free; www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=434.

• Disc Golf at Anderson Valley Brewing Company – Pick up a six-pack at the Tap Room and head outside to play a round of disc golf on the brewery’s 18-hole course. Or, take a tour of the brewery offered daily at 1:30 p.m., (and 3:30 p.m./summer); free; www.avbc.com.

• Pennyroyal Farm – Get your goat on at this new, polished venue marking the entrance to Anderson Valley.  A daily tour at this award-winning farmstead dairy includes a visit to the barn to meet 143+ dairy goat companions and 30 dairy sheep, view of the creamery and finale cheese tasting; $15 for adults/$10 for children/under 5 free.  New Pennyroyal Farms wines are also on tap; (Daily tours $15/adults; $10/children.) www.pennyroyalfarm.com.

• Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree – Size matters. Soaring at 315 feet high with a girth of 21 feet, this 2,000-year-old towering tree is a definite show stopper.  Cut in the late 1930s as a tourist attraction, the Chandelier Tree seems to defy nature, allowing autos a smooth passage through its center, albeit tight at times.  Ideal for Instagram Live, a $5.00 fee gains entry through this gentle giant; there are also wonderful hiking trails in nearby Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area.  www.drivethrutree.com.

• Skunk Train – It’s a train thing and it doesn’t get any better than tucking deep into mystical redwoods aboard the legendary Skunk Train.  Depart from Fort Bragg or Willits, which offers an adventure on the Northspur Flyer, for a four-hour trek ascending the 1,740 ft. summit then pushing through to the lush Noyo River Canyon aboard a vintage railcruiser (one of the original 132-year old Skunks) with an open-air coach.  Prices vary. www.skunktrain.com.

Lim Family Luau dancers at the Mauna Kea Resort Hotel

The Big Island’s Luau at the Mauna Kea Resort—a reverence for Hawaiian song and dance

Culture Editor Tom Wilmer reports from the Big Island of Hawaii–

The Lim family Luau has been performing at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel since Laurance Rockefeller opened the resort in the mid-1960s. Today the luau is the oldest, continuously operating show on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Lorna Lim talks story about her family’s passion (3rd generation) for performing authentic song, hula dance, and tales of old Hawaii. You don’t have to stay at the Mauna Kea to attend the luau, but the resort hotel is a highly recommended place to stay if you’re planning a visit to the Big Island.

Located on the Kohala Coast approximately 24 miles from Kailua/Kona Airport, the Mauna Kea has the insular feel of a private island oasis.

Highlights of the resort include its eye-catching mid-century architecture that has deftly not only stood the test of time, it remains a classic, and its lines are timeless. A big draw is the location, as the resort fronts on one of the Big Island’s most beautiful beaches. The beachfront is wide and sprawling but intimate at the same time.

Culinary offerings are outstanding as well. Manta is the fine dining establishment, but like everything in the islands, casual is the rule. Back in the day, ties for men were requisite for dinner…but fortunately that’s a page from the past.

Speaking of dining, the luau includes a killer buffet dinner. The sprawling array of fresh, local faire is worth the price of admission all on its own.

The offerings are equal if not better than what you’d find at a fine sit-down restaurant almost anywhere on the island.

STEVEN VAN ZANDT

LITTLE STEVEN AND THE DISCIPLES OF SOUL SAY HAPPY HOLIDAYS

WITH VERY SPECIAL NEW SINGLE OUT TODAY

LEGENDARY ARTIST UNWRAPS ALL-NEW RENDITION OF THE RAMONES’ CLASSIC,

“MERRY CHRISTMAS (I DON’T WANT TO FIGHT TONIGHT)”

EPIC “SOULFIRE TOUR 2017” CULMINATES WITH TWO HOMECOMING CONCERTS,

SET FOR BROOKLYN, NY’S BROOKLYN BOWL (DECEMBER 20th)

AND RED BANK, NJ’S COUNT BASIE THEATRE (DECEMBER 23RD)

VAN ZANDT TO APPEAR ON WTF WITH MARC MARON DECEMBER 18

Los Angeles – December 15, 2017 – Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul are celebrating the season with a very special holiday single. “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight),” is out today, Friday, December 15th, at all digital music retailers and streaming services: http://UMe.lnk.to/LittleStevenMerryChristmas

“Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight)” sees Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul bringing their one-of-a-kind sound to The Ramones’ Yuletide classic, written by Joey Ramone and first found on the B-side to the 1987 single, “I Wanna Live.” The new rendition – arranged and produced by Stevie Van Zandt – was recorded by Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul two weeks ago during soundcheck in Utrecht, Netherlands in the midst of their extraordinary “Soulfire Tour 2017,” capturing all the spirit and energy of the 15-piece rock ‘n’ soul revue at the very peak of their formidable onstage power.

Rolling Stone debuted the track and said it “sounds much grander in Van Zandt’s hands,” adding, he “created a Wall of Sound with glockenspiel, chimes, string, organ and sleigh bells, a vocal chorus and saxophone.” Listen at Rolling Stone: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/premieres/hear-little-stevens-cover-of-ramones-merry-christmas-w513808

“This is our tribute to the Ramones, keeping their music alive,” Van Zandt told Rolling Stone. “I needed a third verse so I channeled Joey and wrote what I feel is the third verse he would have written. His brother Mickey heard the record and gave me his blessing.”

Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul – who recently rocked NPR’s World Music Café with an exclusive interview and three-song live set – will wrap up the “Soulfire Tour 2017” with a pair of holiday homecoming concerts, set for Brooklyn, NY’s Brooklyn Bowl (December 20th) and Red Bank, NJ’s Count Basie Theatre (December 23rd). For ticket availability and exclusive VIP packages, please visit littlesteven.com.

The “Soulfire Tour 2017” of course marked the acclaimed release of Little Steven’s sensational new solo album, SOULFIRE, available now via Wicked Cool/Big Machine/UMe. The album is available as CD, digital download, and 180-gram black vinyl, the latter presented as a double LP housed in a gatefold sleeve with the music on Sides 1-3 and a unique etching of Little Steven on Side 4.

SOULFIRE is Stevie Van Zandt’s first solo album in close to two decades and without question his purest and most uniquely personal artistic statement thus far. The album sees the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer revisiting songs that span the length of his career as artist, performer, producer, arranger, and songwriter, focusing directly on the hugely influential “soul horns-meet-rock ‘n’ roll guitars” approach he first pioneered on Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes’ classic first three albums.

SOULFIRE has quickly drawn rapturous applause from fans and critics alike, with Rolling Stone declaring, “Rock’s ultimate sideman reclaims the Jersey Shore sound he helped invent.” “Cynicism, irony and cultivated hip detachment have taken their toll on rock ‘n’ roll,” raved USA Today. “With SOULFIRE, Van Zandt aims to blow all that out and lead listeners back to its more passionate essence.” “It’s hard to imagine a more joyous and revelatory contemporary blue-eyed soul recording,” enthused American Songwriter.  “The appropriately titled SOULFIRE is a tough, tight and clearly inspired project as well as a most welcome return from the musical shadows for Steven Van Zandt.” SOULFIRE “hearkens back to Van Zandt’s classic first solo album of gritty, greasy, horn-accented ‘60s-style rock and soul,” noted Billboard, while Paste proclaimed, “Rockier than Motown or the Sound of Philadelphia, this a joyous invitation to live and love.”

SOULFIRE was arranged and produced by Van Zandt at his own Renegade Studios in New York City, co-produced and recorded by GRAMMY® Award-winner Geoff Sanoff (Fountains of Wayne, Stephen Colbert) and co-produced and music directed by guitarist Marc Ribler. The album was mixed and mastered by Van Zandt’s career-long collaborators and friends Bob Clearmountain (Rolling Stones, David Bowie, The Who, Bryan Adams), and Bob Ludwig (Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, The Band, Sly and the Family Stone).

Little Steven Van Zandt is of course known around the world for his utterly personal songwriting and an ambitious adventurousness that has fueled much of his creative output these past two decades. In addition to his ongoing role as a touring and recording member of The E Street Band, he has also expanded his artistic parameters to include landmark work as an actor on The Sopranos and Lilyhammer as well as host, historian, and rock ‘n’ roll advocate on Sirius XM’s one-and-only “Little Steven’s Underground Garage” (not to mention creator of Sirius XM’s long-running “Outlaw Country” format). Van Zandt has also expanding his musical boundaries to include composing the score for all three seasons of Lilyhammer and additional work as producer and songwriter, lending his distinctive craft to records from an array of international garage rockers.

Little Steven and The Disciples of Soul made their long-awaited live return last October at London’s BluesFest 2016. Van Zandt and the band also crossed the Atlantic this fall for a hugely successful European leg of the “Soulfire Tour 2017,” with multiple stops in England, Scotland, Germany, The Netherlands and Spain, highlighted by Paul McCartney sitting in to perform “I Saw Her Standing There” in London, and then the band performing a lunchtime show at Liverpool’s Cavern Club.

Zaytoven x Wake Up & Cook Up

ZAYTOVEN RELEASES NEW TRACK “WAKE UP & COOK UP” FEATURING QUAVO AND 2 CHAINZ

Debut Album Out In 2018

Award-winning multiplatinum super producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Zaytoven releases his new track “Wake Up & Cook Up” [feat. Quavo and 2 Chainz] at all digital retailers today. Get it HERE. It’s the second release under the partnership between his Familiar Territory Records and Motown.

“Wake Up & Cook Up” draws heavily on the signature trap production that made Zaytoven a household name and with the help of Atlanta rap heavyweights Quavo and 2 Chainz delivers a powerful second single. “Wake Up & Cook Up.” sets the stage for the arrival of more new music very soon. Listen to it HERE.

Between cooking up beats for hip-hop’s elite, Zaytoven remains immersed in the creative process behind his forthcoming full-length debut-out in 2018.

A true trendsetter, Zaytoven proved integral to the sonic architecture of the Atlanta scene with which he stands synonymous. His influence can easily be felt in nearly every corner of hip-hop and R&B. 2011 saw him win his first GRAMMY® for co-producing and writing “Papers” on Usher‘s Raymond v. Raymond. Among countless multiplatinum productions for the likes of Gucci Mane and Migos, he teamed up with Future for seminal 2015 collaborative mixtape, Beast Mode. Everybody from Drake and Nicki Minaj to Rick Ross and Lil Yachty has sought him out.

Unsurprisingly, his musical acumen encompasses more than just beat-making. Born in Germany, raised in San Francisco, and based in Atlanta, Zaytoven‘s nickname pays homage to his piano virtuosity. VIBE has hailed him as “Atlanta’s true trap music pioneer” while Complex praised his “singular blend of layered, oscillating synth melodies, ominous organ chords, and booming low-end bass.” Founding Familiar Territory Records, he’s becoming a cultural tastemaker and entrepreneur in 2017 as well.

YUNGBLUD × TIN PAN BOY

UK ARTIST YUNGBLUD SHARES VIDEO FOR “TIN PAN BOY” TODAY

WATCH IT HERE

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES SET FOR SPRING

UK recording artist YUNGBLUD shares the video for “TIN PAN BOY” today. Watch it HERE. The song is available HERE via Locomotion/Geffen Records.

Self-directed by Yungblud, the video for “Tin Pan Boy” is, in his own words: “my opportunity to create a visualization of the shit I saw in my head when I wrote the song. I wanted to show the high energy, angry, yet slightly mad side of my personality. It’s the first time I’ve directed anything and I had such an insane time. It was amazing to watch a mental idea I had come to life.”

The massive redevelopment of Denmark Street in London’s Soho neighborhood and the subsequent eviction of independent businesses inspired the song.

Emerging from the gritty north of England 19-year-old YUNGBLUD brings to the stage an explosion of raw energy and thought-provoking lyrics. He has created his own blend of alternative rock: poetry, guitar-hooks and break-beats with a fierce determination to make a dent in pop-culture.
