Bartees Cox, a songwriter and guitarist based out of Brooklyn, created Bartees & The Strange Fruit as a conduit to surface stories about people of color. The title of the debut album, Magic Boy, (out December 8, 2017 via Pineapple Record Co.) is inspired by a lyric from the song “Hear My Train A Comin” that goes: “Well, I gotta leave this town, gonna be a Voodoo chile .. and try to be a magic boy.” This particular lyric has always resonated with Bartees since he made the decision to leave his home in rural Oklahoma for the East Coast, a change that is looked back on as being a pivotal moment in his life. This record marks Bartees’ obsession with analog recording, tape machines, space echoes, reel-to-reels and a number of other types of hi-fi recording gear. Each song was recorded to tape, or at least mixed to tape, to give it the warmth of a real performance.

“The “Magic Boy” is how my family sees me,” says Bartees. “Their kid that has made it work in New York, chasing a dream.”

A true artist’s music represents personal reflection, and still manages to express the zeitgeist. Hip Hop has always been somewhat of a voice for the silent, solace for the weak and for many a political platform. Interscope Records emcee Dreezy recently teamed up with 6LACK and Kodak Black to let out a few frustrations on a track titled “Spar.”The animated video for “Spar” uses friendly, energetic visuals to convey serious, important issues about America’s current political turmoil. The video was created by Tristan Zammit, whose collaborated with the likes of Lil Yatchy and A$AP Ferg.

LOEWE Celebrates Chance Encounters III

WHAT             “Chance Encounters III” Exhibition Opening

WHERE           LOEWE Miami Design District

WHEN             December 5th, 2017

The opening event for the “Chance Encounters III” exhibition, with works by Sara Flynn, Richard Smith and Lionel Wendt took place on December 5th at the LOEWE store in the Miami Design District during Miami Art Week. Notable guests including, Aimee Song, Ana Kras, Candela Novembre, Caroline Vreeland, Chloe Weiss, Dev Hynes, Gala Gonzalez, Laura de Gunzburg, Martha Graeff, Pari Ehsan, Sita Abellan, Stefano Tonchi, Sara Flynn and Harry Smith joined event host and LOEWE’s Creative Director, Jonathan Anderson, to celebrate the new exhibition.

The exhibition will run from 6th December to 4th February, 2018.

While working in different creative fields; diverse mediums of fabric sculpture, ceramic and photography and spanning the 1930s to the present day; shadows and the interplay of forms are the threads which tie together the works in this third exhibition, as well as an enduring focus on craftsmanship which is central to the ethos of the LOEWE FOUNDATION.

Jonathan Anderson said: “Art and craft are always at the center of my creative process and these exhibitions are an exciting way of exploring artists that are important to me. I love the unexpected things that happen when people from completely different worlds are brought together, the antagonism can create something completely new.”

Max Hammer (Planet Rock Climbing Team-Ann Arbor, Michigan) is a 4 time USA National Speed Climbing Champion and held the Pan American Speed Climbing title from 2014-2017.  He has been competing internationally as a member of the USA Climbing National Youth Team since 2013 and the USA Climbing National Adult Team since 2015.  During his years as a USA Climbing National Team member he has represented the USA at Youth World Championships, Adult World Championships, Pan American Championships, and the World Cup Circuit.  He was selected as one of 8 youth climbers in the USA to become a member of The North Face Young Gun Rookie Team (2015-2016), an award presented to the top youth climbers in the country who exemplify leadership, commitment, and sportsmanship and epitomize the role of ambassador for the sport -nationally and internationally.

 

Max is currently a student in the Honors College at the University of Michigan with plans to go to Medical School.   As a Freshman at UM, he juggles his classwork, developmental biology research, and climbing for Planet Rock Team and University of Michigan Climbing Club. He plans on competing in the USA Climbing Youth, Adult, and Collegiate series and hopes to continue to represent USA Climbing on the World stage this year.

 

Max’s favorite outdoor climbing crags are Magic Woods, Switzerland and Arco, Italy.
