MILK & HONEY TAPAS

”If you don’t love this industry [Food and Beverage] then don’t do it … the amount of time is overwhelming.” – Al Rojas

By Vaughn Lowery

Nearly twenty years ago, Al Rojas received some investment capital from his father (died from cancer 25 years ago) to become a restaurateur. After years of successfully running Santa Barbara’s widely popular Alcazar Tapas Bar, he commenced to sink his teeth into another endeavor – Milk & Honey Tapas [MHT]. This eclectic, snug cafe with curbside dining provides an array of mystical libations and mouth watering snacks for foodies.

Specialty cocktails are their strong suit; however, the drinks are so intoxicating that you’ll have to taste their menu. After one drink, we were buzzing like busy bees in the hive. Hence, we started with flash-fried kale chips topped with manchego cheese and an order of Prosciutto Bundles stuffed with goat cheese. Yummy. Next up, we ordered PB&J Sliders (sirloin sliders, peanut butter, raspberry jam, Applewood smoked bacon) and Honey Lamb Pops (char broiled lamb chops; teriyaki, honey, butter, shallot, brown sugar sauce) – yes, we licked both our fingers and the bones. One of the most intriguing indigenous dishes we tried was Por-Que Pig?! (pulled pork shoulder, creamed pasilla chiles, garlic cilantro rice, manchego cheese, fresh cilantro, tomato; tomatillo cream sauce). Definitely not one of the most attractive items on the menu, but it sure was the most delightful – we scraped our bowls. For dessert, we received their house funnel cake alongside of a dark cup of coffee.

Rojas boasts of being a globetrotter (Spain, France, UK, Grenada, Copenhagen, Montreal) and reminds us that his infused assortments were inspired by his travels. Adorning smart specs and possessing a charismatic personality, no wonder his wait staff is equally professional and attentive – his power to lead permeates the air. Something that his father instilled in him, “Treat everyone equally [no matter what their position in life may be].” Moreover, the fun-loving GM and crew kept the dimly lit dinner service packed like a can of sardines.

In short, this is one of the best tapas and sips we have put our lips on in a long time. In fact, Milk & Honey Tapas rivals some of the top restaurants in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. If you possess an appetite for tangy handcrafted concoctions paired with savory bites, then this place will literally blow your wig back.

CARR WINERY SANTA BARBARA

“Work hard, play hard and source really good fruit… it all starts from the fruit!” – Jessica Carr

By Vaughn Lowery

Since 1999, Owner/Winemaker/Sommelier Ryan Carr and wife Jessica Carr have been developing an impeccable assortment of Pinot wines – crisp, juicy and delicious. Established in downtown Santa Barbara, their main tasting room is inside of a quonset hut. If the corrugated structure doesn’t enthrall you to enter, Jessica’s warm smile and innate ability to promote her product will have you become a member of their 800+ wine club. The decor is modern yet industrial with a saloon-ish style bar with wine on tap. Adjacent is an outdoor comfy patio where you and a group of friends can soak up a session while basking in the sunshine.

Throughout the space are stacked barrels, workers fermenting grapes with monthly rotating provocative art pieces scattered throughout the walls on consignment. Everyone knows grapes love art and when the fruit is happy so is the wine.

Ryan wasn’t available for our private tasting but his presence was prevalent. During harvest, he’s out in the fields picking and sorting fruits. He and Jessica met at the University of Arizona about 20 years ago – he majored in graphic design and she in communications. It was inevitable that Ryan designed the ultra chique labels and she wrote many of their outward facing materials.

Nothing can stand in the way of their success with such an immense passion for winemaking and a strong business acumen. And, the positive reviews alongside of 90+ scores keep rolling in. Named one of Six California Wineries You Should Know About.

“Carr produces polished, authoritative Pinot Noirs from various Sta. Rita Hills vineyards.” – S.H., Wine Enthusiast

They started with only 15 people almost two decades ago; now with 2 locations and a wine management company (early September they handled the grand opening for sister brand CrossHatch Wines) – they’re invincible. Presently, they have no children, but obviously the grapes are their babies. Angel is their Rottweiler/Shepherd 2yro dog and was rescued from an overcrowded litter. Evidently, the Carrs have huge hearts and it’s known throughout the city. Everyone we encountered both inside and outside the winery respects their philanthropic endeavors. In fact, they’re always giving back to local charities.

Moreover, this eclectic outfit is host to a plethora of music events where indie rock to reggae bands showcase their talent on Friday nights from 6-8pm.

Be on the lookout this Halloween for their costume competiton where they will have a live DJ, small bites as well as spooky decorations. And if that doesn’t float your boat, you may want to check out their WOGA (wine + yoga) which is rumored to be held on their outdoor patio. Other honorable mentions include their indie pop-up market which will showcase local artisanal made goods and their 46 wine lockers – customers can store 4, 8, 16 and up to 72 cases per rental.

It’s so refreshing to come across such a winery ambiance only 82 miles from central Los Angeles. We drove up in the Lexus GS F 10th Anniversary Limited Edition to add to this whimsical wine experience.

THE SALTY STRINGS TRIO

We’re kicking off the return of live music with three members from local bluegrass group, The Salty Strings. This group transcends the boundaries of traditional bluegrass music, adding percussive elements and blending notes of Latin and jazz.

They’re known to put on an engaging live performance filled with fast-picking originals and old-timey favorites, and we’re so looking forward to having them in the winery. Salty Strings will be pluckin’ alongside the art 6-8:30 PM.

GUS HARPER

Based in Los Angeles, Harper has been creating and selling art around the world for the past 18 years. His work is moving, capturing your eyes and mind with geometric patterns, captivating iridescence, and immense detail. “Like the best of Pop, their effect is to awaken us to the strangeness of the ordinary, to present the most routine encumbrances of our daily lives as almost miraculous apparitions.”

*Carr Vineyards & Winery is a small, handcrafted winery producing 4500 cases in downtown Santa Barbara. All of the wines made by Carr are sourced from Santa Barbara County vineyards and are made in a traditional winemaking style to capture the essence of the grape varietal and region. The vast microclimates of Santa Barbara County allow the winery to produce several wines including Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sangiovese, Grenache, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Carr Winery has two locations for guests to enjoy wine tasting, wines by the glass and wine on tap: The Barrel Room in downtown Santa Barbara and The Warehouse in Santa Ynez.

16YROLD AND KILLY TEAM UP FOR “NO ROMANCE” AVAILABLE NOW

RELEASE NEW VISUAL FOR “NO ROMANCE”

NEW YORK, NY (September 29, 2017) — Highly sought-after Soundcloud artist & producer 16YROLD and Toronto rapper KILLY share the music video for their new collaborative single “No Romance.” Watch the visual HERE which premiered on Pigeons & Planes earlier today.

This compact and chaotic banger pairs 16YROLD’s maniacally melodic musical vision with KILLY’s warped and warbling raps. The two rising stars figure prominently in the visual, causing trouble on Rodeo Drive and wilding out inside of a claustrophobic space.
It’s a devilishly distorted and dynamic clip worthy of the track’s unpredictability.
Get “No Romance” HERE

By his junior year in high school, Ohio-born and New York-based producer and rapper 16YROLD had made a dent in the Soundcloud scene from his bedroom with hypnotic, airy, and unpredictable productions. After unofficially remixing countless prominent smashes, he scored a viral hit producing NESSLY’s “Rita Ora,” which racked up over 1.3M Soundcloud plays before going on to cook up beats for everyone from Famous Dex to Lil Yachty. The Fader described him best writing, “You can feel the passion in this bedroom trap.” By 2017, he amassed a formidable catalog and logged miles on the road supporting both Desiigner and 21 Savage. The buzz for the 18-year-old had reached critical mass, and Victor Victor Worldwide signed him in late 2017.

Spinning into Record Books

Break It ’til You Make It…Spinning Into The Records Book

Over 70 breaking aficionados have set a world record for the most simultaneous windmill moves completed in 30 seconds.

The windmill is a classic Hip Hop dance move in which the legs are lifted high in the air and twisted in a windmill pattern, while the torso and head rest against the floor. The world record for the most windmills – the most recognizable move in breaking – was completed simultaneously by the largest group of dancers aged between 15 and 50 years old.

The world record was set at Kinderdijk, a village in the Netherlands’ South Holland province, known for its iconic 18th-century windmills and a monument to the history of humankind that was officially included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Over the past few years, the Hip Hop scene – and the culture that surrounds it – has grown dramatically, with rappers like Poke and Brainpower filling the country with old school beats and fuelling a society of talented breakers, battling in competitions around the Netherlands and around the World.

Leading the breakers is Italy’s Mauro Peruzzi – aka Cico, the ‘Prince of Power’. Known for his dynamic, gymnastic, power moves, Cico is one of the most impressive talents in the B-Boy Dance form today and this is not his first World Record. Especially heralded for his energetic airflare combination moves and incredible ‘1990s’, where he spins and speed in a one-armed handstand, holding the World Record with a mind-boggling 27 revolutions.

The World Record Breaking event marks the growing breaking scene in the Netherlands, with Amsterdam hosting this year’s BC One World Finals.

RED BULL BC ONE WORLD FINAL

The excitement is building now that 15 dancers of 16 have been revealed for the 14th edition of the Red Bull BC One World Final in Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek. On November 4, the best breakers from 9 different countries will battle in a one-on-one knockout competition in Europe’s most dynamic and innovative city. Some of the most groundbreaking dancing is expected to be seen on the Westergasfabriek’s dance floor to identify the ONE B-Boy/B-Girl who can claim the esteemed title of Red Bull BC One World Champion. The capital city, known for its artistic heritage, canals, narrow houses, and its numerous bike paths, will host the world final for the very first time in one of the city’s thriving creative hotspots.

ABOUT RED BULL BC ONE

Red Bull BC One is a global celebration of Hip Hop, combining dance, music, style and art followed by millions on TV and online. Since its inception in 2004, it has become the premier competition in the world of break dancing, consistently attracting the best individual breakers on the planet. Since the first event in Switzerland, the annual competition has moved from Germany to Brazil, South Africa, France, USA, Russia, South Korea, Italy, and Japan.

ISAAC GRACIE SHARES MURA MASA COLLABORATION

THE DEATH OF YOU & I EP RELEASED TODAY

“a poetic creature who channels a mysticism, haloing his sounds with a timeless quality” i-D

Isaac Gracie is pleased to share, “One Night”, the third track from his new EP, The Death Of You & I – out today through Republic Records. “One Night” was written alongside Mura Masa, and recorded/produced at Eastcote Studios in London, and helps to form Isaac’s most fully realised body of work to date.

For a young artist who exudes growing confidence from each release, The Death Of You & I is Isaac at his most characterful and accomplished, and “One Night” is another singular example of what he’s doing so beautifully.

The Death of You & I EP was largely recorded at London’s Eastcote Studios, and whilst it doesn’t signal a change of direction from Isaac’s output to date, it certainly suggests a versatility and alternate side of his character. The roaring title track, with its unexpected, theatrical chorus line, sounds as though it could be soundtracking an old spaghetti western before exploding with rage.

“Silhouettes of You” which follows is a soaring widescreen anthem of quite dizzying proportions. It doesn’t simply scrape the sky so much as slowburns through it. It’s the lighters/mobile backlights aloft scorcher that should soundtrack ‘moments’ the globe over. A staggering anthem.

With the release here of “One Night” and the EP’s conclusion, the tender “Love” (Ain’t Always So Good), a more hushed folksy story that mostly resembles the earlier tracks that featured on Isaac’s introductory EPs, it’s a record that signals a fascinating step forward for the young London based musician.

Tender and charming, it’s the sound of a young poet comfortable with dropping his words onto a page and re-arranging them emphatically. Isaac orbits a musical world that is almost oversubscribed with talented young voices, but in truth he acts as the antidote to all of them. A characterful modern musician who takes the tested inspirations of love and hurt, and portrays it vividly with that moreish, keening vocal of his. He’s the real deal.

Elton John today announces the forthcoming release of ‘Diamonds.’ Released on November 10th through UMe, ‘Diamonds’ is the ultimate greatest hits collection from Elton John and will be available on 1CD, 2CD, 3CD limited edition boxset, 2LP heavy-weight gatefold vinyl and digital formats.

Kicking off with the ever-stunning ‘Your Song,’ this definitive collection brings together all the landmark hits of one of the greatest song books of all time, including ‘Tiny Dancer,’ ‘Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going To Be A Long, Long Time),’ ‘Candle In The Wind,’ ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,’ ‘Sacrifice,’ ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight.’

Diamonds’ coincides with the 50th anniversary of Elton’s phenomenal song writing partnership with Bernie Taupin. Meeting in 1967 through a music magazine advert seeking songwriters, Elton and Bernie went on to become one of the most enduring song writing duos of all time, achieving a sustained level of success that puts them head and shoulders above the competition. Catapulted into the limelight as a song writing force in 1971 with ‘Your Song,’ the duo never stood still creatively, defining an era with their run of back-to-back classic 1970’s albums. While ‘Candle In The Wind’ topped the charts in three different decades and 2016’s critically acclaimed ‘Wonderful, Crazy, Night’ was a top ten hit in the US, their legacy is one that is unrivalled in terms of longevity, creativity and commercial success.

Speaking about their relationship, Elton says: ‘We are at 50 years, and our relationship is healthier than it’s ever been. There have been times in our relationship when we’ve written with other people, but it still didn’t stop the love. I love Bernie more than I’ve ever done and I think he probably feels the same way about me, because we’ve both led separate lives; we both write in separate rooms. We have an amazing respect and love for each other that’s only grown.’

Bernie Taupin says: ‘We still get a kick out of what we do; it’s what we do – when we come together and write something, it still has that magical quality to it – it doesn’t get any better than that. That feeling hasn’t aged.’

Available in the US to pre-order now on four physical formats (plus digital formats), the 1CD version of ‘Diamonds’ contains 17 songs, the 2CD version of ‘Diamonds’ contains 34 songs, a 10-page booklet with contemporary illustrations of iconic Elton looks, while the 2LP version is pressed onto heavy-weight 180 gram vinyl and contains gatefold artwork. Housed in an attractive lidded box, the 3CD limited edition boxset version of ‘Diamonds’ also contains a 72-page hardback book containing annotations for the stories behind each track plus a set of five postcards of illustrations of Elton. As well as a collection of some of the best loved songs of all time, all illustrations in these four formats are by contemporary artist Richard Kilroy.

The announcement of this definitive package comes at a time when Elton’s enduring legacy and relevance across the worlds of music, fashion and entertainment continues to burn as brightly as ever. Just last week Gucci unveiled their Spring Summer 2018 collection designed by Alessandro Michele and inspired by Elton’s inimitable style, referencing original items taken from the style icon’s archives. Elton also attended the world premiere of global box office number one sensation Kingsman: The Golden Circle, a film in which he appears as himself in a critically lauded, hilariously tongue-in-cheek role. Kingsman: The Golden Circle also features some of the classic tracks which can be found on ‘Diamonds,’ including ‘Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting.)’

An unparalleled career that has forever changed the cultural landscape, Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s music continues to fill stadiums, top charts and win new fans across the generations.
