360 Magazine Q&A with BFGoodrich Performance team member Andrew Comrie-Picard

Tell me about your background as a stunt driver…your most notable movies/shows etc.? Anything new and exciting coming up?

  • For four years on Top Gear USA, I did most of the exotic car precision driving, which means I got to drive all the best supercars in anger. So much better than a real job!  I drove an Aston Martin Vantage V12 wide open drifting on a dry lakebed, Lamborghini Aventador SV-670 in a bullring, Mercedes AMG SLS sideways between airport hangers. These are the things stunt guys dream of and I got to do all of them. I’ve done a number of features but probably the most exciting is “Atomic Blonde” which is out in theatres July 28. Any film has a huge team of people making it possible, but I was lucky to work with the hero, Charlize Theron. I’m also hosting a new car build/stunt show on Discovery Channel airing April 17 at 10pm called “Car Saviors.” We put a 600hp Hemi in a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow and I drift it with VIPs in the back seat…Did I mention this is better than a real job?

Why do you think stunt drive/car movies are so popular?

  • Not everyone jumps off buildings or gets into technical MMA fights but everyone (more or less) can drive. I think the car stunts seem closer to reality. It’s not like everyone thinks they could do that insane drift or that big jump, but it’s the same steering wheel and pedals for everyone. If that guy can do it… hold my beer.

Top things we can do to upgrade our vehicles to access timely performance like stunt pro drivers such as yourself (safely)?

  • Stunt people are cowboys for sure, but we’re always trying to control whatever we can to ensure safety. Equipment is crucial. The most important piece of equipment on a car is the tires. Any time we set up a gag on a film we’re thinking about the type of tire, the pressure we’re running it at and how it’s going to behave. For a long time I have only used BFGoodrich tires whenever I can. The Rolls Royce on “Car Saviors” has a set of BFGoodrich g-force™ Sport Comp-2™ tires on it. I know BFGoodrich tires not only have a super high level of grip but that they are predictable on the limit. We call the way a tire communicates at the limit its “progressivity” and BFGoodrich is better than anyone there. The new Advantage T/A® Sport and g-Force™ Comp-2™ A/S are both amazing for handling any conditions with total predictability.

What are you top 3 favorite stunt/car movies of all time?

  • What a great question. For raw car stunts, you can’t beat Frankenheimer directing “Ronin.” The opposing traffic stuff wasn’t choreographed, it was just happening. I later got to work with Jean Reno and it blew my mind. I have a real weakness for the campy and European stuff, so the original 1998 Luc Besson “Taxi” and the original 2002 “The Transporter” with Jason Statham are awesome. For American films, the first “Fast and the Furious” directed by Rob Cohen still holds up, and I worked with Rob later too. By far the best car movie of all time is the 1966 “Grand Prix”, also directed by Frankenheimer whom I wish I could have met. Today, I think David Leitch is one of the most exciting action directors, since he comes from stunt work himself (“John Wick”) and he directs the upcoming “Atomic Blonde.” So I’m going to say “Atomic Blonde,” since I worked on that!

What’s in your garage now?

  • It’s a riot in there. I have a 1967 MGB, 1967 MG Midget, 1972 Jaguar E-Type, 1982 Porsche 928, 2013 VW GTI, and the jewel in the crown, the “widowmaker” 1982 Porsche 930 Turbo, a real icon. All have BFGoodrich tires holding on to the ground.

2016 Bentley Bentayga (Auto)

2016 Bentley Bentayga

Enter the Ultra Luxury Class SUV

By: Shin Takei, Automotive Editor At Large

When Bentley announced they were going to build a SUV a few years ago, I wasn’t sure if it was going to work. Up to this point the Range Rover Autobiography was the top SUV in the world and there was everything else. But after driving the Bentayga on paved roads I must say a new era has arrived. Since I didn’t experience the car off-road, I can’t comment on its behavior away from pavement. However, I have a feeling that over 90% of its owners will stay on pavement most of the time. The Bentayga is powered by a new 6 liter twin turbo W12 engine with an 8 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. It develops 600 bhp at 5000-6000rpm and 664 lb-ft of torque at 1350-4500rpm, enough to propel the 5379 lb vehicle from 0-60 in 4.0 seconds. The overall shape is that of a large SUV but the styling is unmistakable Bentley with the wide grille and signature lighting. As with other models the panels with sharp creases are Superformed out of aluminum.  There are three wheel sizes from 20” to 22”. Bespoke ordering allows the owner to choose from 19 standard exterior colors expanded to 90 custom choices. There are 15 interior leather colors and 3 duo-tone combinations together with 7 wood veneers to allow the owner to create his own environment.

Open the door and climb onto the throne. If the scent of premium leather doesn’t intoxicate you, the high-grade hand assembled components that make the luxurious interior will forever spoil you to accept anything less.  There are 16 or 22 way adjustable seats with 6 programmable massage functions to relax you. Degree of build quality is high as tolerances are kept to a tenth of a millimeter. As expected, Bentayga comes equipped with a plethora of standard and Bespoke features to choose from.

The familiar Mulliner Driving Specification provides enhancements like diamond pattern quilted seating and door panels. Event Specification provides a sliding folding event seat in the rear cargo area for “tail gate events”.  All Terrain Specification adds four off-road driving modes like Mud and Trail, Sand, Dirt & Gravel and Snow, Ice and Wet Grass. Styling Specification is about carbon fiber additions and aerodynamic improvements to the front, side and rear body. You can add the Black Brightware Specification to make all bright trim black and get a meaner look. The Luggage Management Specification secures your luggage to the cargo area floor. Additionally there are Retractable tow bar and Sill Steps, aerodynamic roof cross bars for cargo box, surfboards and bike carrier for the tow bar. Bespoke Three piece picnic hamper which can cost more than your other car and the Mulliner Breitling Tourbillon Clock will definitely enhance the luxury of your Bentayga.

Suspension travel is 8.85 inches with a maximum ground clearance of 9.6 inches and the wading depth is 19.7 inches. These will come in handy when you encounter sudden storms with heavy rainfall or cross streams and culverts. On the highway, the Bentayga is stable, smooth, comfortable and reassuring. On curvaceous roads the all-wheel drive and Bentley Drive Dynamics Mode keep it on the road even if you drift away.  Yes you can get used to all of this in the lap of luxury and be reassured you can drive anywhere on your property even in severe weather that may render your other vehicles stay inside the garage. Now for the 1% and 5% Dilemma: If you’re within the 1% you really don’t have a dilemma, you just have to decide if you really need one and go order one at your local Bentley dealer. If you’re part of the 5% your dilemma is whether you should sell or trade in your Range Rover Autobiography for the Bentayga. For sure the valets will move the Range Rover aside for you so your Bentayga will have front-row center. 12/For the rest of us we can look forward to the Bentayga if and when we can make it up there. The Bentayga is definitely the most powerful, fastest, most luxurious and most exclusive vehicle in the ultra -luxury SUV segment.

Western River Expeditions

The veteran guides of Western River Expeditions recommend six places to swim, dive & soak on legendary rafting rivers in the West.

For Immediate Release

Summer Fun is Synonymous with Swimming –
Western River Expeditions Offers Its Top Picks for
Swimming Holes, Pools and Hot Springs on Rivers in the West

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, May 11, 2017 – Getting wet under the hot summer sun and thoroughly enjoying it is an experience that participants of a whitewater rafting trip anticipate with youthful exuberance. It might be a giant wave from a rapid, a friendly water fight between rafts or a swim in a side stream or river eddy. The aim is to get drenched. However, knowing where to soak in a fun and safe environment is important.

For the benefit of river runners everywhere, the veteran guides of Western River Expeditions have recommended six places to swim, dive or soak on four legendary rafting rivers in the West. Following are the expert’s picks where spending time cavorting like seals enhances the inner child.

Colorado River – Cataract Canyon, Utah / Indian Creek at river mile 30.5
From spring through early summer, a waterfall and pool are wedged into a narrow side canyon paradise with 2,000-foot canyon walls and displays of Native American ruins.  Guests leave their rafts to hike to this secluded slice of Indian Creek that starts miles away in the Abajo Mountains. This is a 4-day rafting trip for ages 10 and up with rates from $1,475. Guests thrill to Class III and IV rapids over the 100-mile journey. See: http://www.westernriver.com/cataract-canyon-rafting

Colorado River – Upper Grand Canyon, Arizona / Havasu Creek at mile 157
Hike a mile up from the Colorado River along the turquoise waters of Havasu Creek and you come to Ruby Pools. Here, every 20 feet or so is another 5 to 10-foot waterfall. Ruby Pools is the best spot for small jumps off the rocks into deep waters. Beyond Ruby, accessed by a long hike in from the rim, are 10 miles of Havasu Creek from Supai Village to the Colorado River, regarded as one of the most stunning Gardens of Eden on Earth. It takes another private visit to access this section of Havasu. Western’s iconic raft trip is a 6- or 7-day vacation for ages 12 and up, from $2,699 per person. Class III to V rapids abound on the 188-mile river course. See: http://www.westernriver.com/grand-canyon-vacation

Colorado River – Lower Grand Canyon, Arizona / Pumpkin Spring at mile 212.9
The rock formation, colored orange with streaks down the sides looks just like a giant pumpkin. Here is the best cliff jumping spot in the canyon. The water is warmer than the upper canyon, but inside the pumpkin itself, it’s recommended for foot-soaking only, not for swimming. The water contains high levels of arsenic as well as concentrations of lead, zinc, copper and other metals. Under the direction of a guide, jumping off the pumpkin into the river is a ton of fun. This gentler section of the Colorado River can accommodate ages 9 and up on Class II and III rapids. This is a 3-day program with rates from $1,299. See: http://www.westernriver.com/grand-canyon-river-trip

Green River – Desolation Canyon, Utah / Rock Creek at river mile 41
A side canyon, spring-fed stream, Rock Creek is usually clear and tempting for a nice long dip. Brook trout thrive here in the shadows of Rock Creek Canyon that sports a former homestead built of hand-carved sandstone. Hikers will see Fremont petroglyphs on the hike in. Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch found that the rugged terrain here offered a perfect hideaway. Floating down the Green River, guests know they have arrived at Rock Creek because of the natural oasis, with old ranch outbuildings shaded by apple trees. Legendary American author and environmental crusader Edward Abbey on a 1980 Desolation float wrote, “This is one of the sweetest, brightest, grandest, loneliest of primitive regions still remaining.” This is a 5-day adventure for ages 5 and up. Over its 99 miles, guests encounter Class II and III rapids. See: http://www.westernriver.com/desolation-canyon

Main Salmon River, Idaho / Barth Hot Springs at river mile 22.5
Sore muscles need attention! This is an easy hike off the river to a hot springs pool with a beautiful view of the river canyon. The large springs can accommodate up to a dozen soakers. This 5-day vacation through Class III and IV rapids over 82 river miles is for ages 6 and up with rates from $1,590. See: http://www.westernriver.com/main-salmon-river

Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Idaho / Sunflower Hot Springs at mile 32.6
This free-flowing river drops 3,000 feet over the 100-mile course through the River of No Return Wilderness, the largest wilderness in the Lower 48. Enroute guests enjoy Sunflower Hot Springs seeping from a bedrock outcrop 30 feet above the river. An improvised wooden spout sends a stream of hot water cascading off the edge into a relaxing riverside shower. Water reaches 100 degrees, providing a hot-water massage for tired muscles. Here, the Sheepeater Indians would soak the horns of Bighorn sheep so they could create their bows. This 5- or 6-day journey welcomes ages 7 and up, with Class III and IV rapids over 100 river miles. See: http://www.westernriver.com/middle-fork-salmon-river

River and Canyon Swimming Safety Tips from the Experts

  • Always wear your lifejacket or PFD (personal flotation device). A PFD is required while swimming with a guide’s permission off the bank or in the main river channel.  Ask your guides whether it should be worn off-river while swimming in side canyon creeks and hot springs.  It should be fastened and adjusted to a snug fit. It must always be worn while in the raft. Wearing a pair of floatable footwear (Teva sandals for example) is also a good idea when swimming.
  • Swim only when and where your guides instruct.
  • Always be sure to let your guides or another adult know where you are, especially when you plan to enter the water.
  • Never jump into the river or pool unless your guide says it’s ok to do so. Always jump feet first.
  • Watch for signs of chill or the onset of hyperthermia. The water in the river can be cold, especially on early season trips or on rivers that are dam controlled.
  • Never swim alone!  Use the Buddy System.
  • Try not to swallow the water.  It may look clear and clean but you never know what has gotten into it upstream.
  • Get out before you are tired. Exhaustion comes on quick and can lead to slips and accidents.
  • Protect yourself from the sun.  Exposure can be intense. Be sure to wear a waterproof, broad spectrum SPF 40+ applied at minimum 30 minutes before entering the water. Be sure to reapply immediately after you dry off.
  • Know where the kids are at all times!  Kids love water but they can easily get in over their head.

BMW safety concerns (Auto)

ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross conducted an in-depth investigation into BMW safety concerns and discovered dozens of incidents in which the luxury cars caught fire even though owners reported they had parked their cars and turned them off.

Portions of Ross’ reporting aired on “Good Morning America” this morning. More will air tonight on “World News Tonight with David Muir” and “Nightline.”

BMW mystery fires: An ABC News investigation

Vehicle owners and fire departments across the country are asking BMW to explain how some parked cars could suddenly burst into flames.

An ABC News investigation airing today on Good Morning America, World News Tonight with David Muir and Nightline discovered dozens of incidents in which the luxury cars caught fire even though owners reported they had parked their cars and turned them off.

After initially saying they were unaware of any such incidents, a BMW spokesman says the company has investigated the fires brought to its attention by ABC News and has “not seen any pattern” related to a “product defect.”

For one such owner, Bill Macko, BMW wasn’t just a car. It was an identity.

The 55-year-old small business owner says he had bought seven luxury vehicles from the German automaker since 2000. He was a dues-paying member of the BMW Car Club of America, so he read BMW magazines, carried BMW luggage and wore BMW clothes. He was such a BMW enthusiast that he became, he says, a kind of unofficial brand ambassador, introducing so many new customers to the local BMW dealership that the salesmen occasionally cut him a check for his services.

“I was an aficionado,” Macko said. “I had brought so many people on board to BMWs, it was crazy.

Everybody knew that I loved them so much … I mean, I lived the product, you know?”

On the night of Dec. 1, 2015, however, Macko says his 2008 BMW X5 suddenly and inexplicably caught fire as it sat parked in his garage in Olney, Maryland. Macko’s wife had just returned from a short drive, parked the car and turned it off. She entered the house and told Macko she noticed a strange smell in the car, and when Macko walked into the garage to check it out, he arrived just in time to hear a “snap, crackle, pop” and see the car burst into flames.

Macko and his wife ran from the house as the fire engulfed the garage and spread throughout both the lower and upper floors. Dozens of firefighters arrived to battle the blaze, and the Mackos watched, from a neighbor’s yard, as their home burned to the ground.

“You cannot do a thing,” Macko said. “That’s the sad part about it.”

Macko had brought the car in for service at the dealership just days before, so he initially thought the fire had been caused by the new battery the mechanics had installed, but once the fire was out, he got another surprise. He learned he’s not the only BMW owner to be left asking questions in the wake of a mysterious fire that started after the car was shut off.

Like many car manufacturers, BMW has issued recalls over the years for fire-related problems, but an ABC News investigation launched in collaboration with ABC-owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and Raleigh, found more than 40 fires occurring in parked cars across the country in the last five years involving vehicles that did not have open recalls for fire-related issues.

Fire officials in Westchester County outside New York City told WABC-TV they were stunned when they learned how long a 2003 BMW had been sitting parked before it caught on fire.

“The owner told us that the car had been parked for at least four, three or four days,” Mamaroneck Fire Chief Tracey Schmaling told WABC investigative reporter Jim Hoffer. “Which we thought was a little peculiar.”

According to KABC in Los Angeles, a 2011 BMW parked overnight caught fire last month, damaging the car but sparing the Darth Vader costume its owner Steve Copeland wore in performances at children’s charity events.

“I had planned to do an event the next day, so Darth Vader’s sitting on a mannequin in the front seat, and the police and the fire department thought somebody was in the car when it was on fire, so they busted the windows out,” Copeland told KABC. “A couple of the cops thought it was pretty funny. [Darth Vader] has been through a fire before, if you know the story.”

And WTVD in Raleigh spoke to Danielle Emerson, a mother of three, who says she was sleeping when her 2011 BMW caught fire in her garage but sprung out of bed to battle the blaze with a garden hose until fire engines arrived.

“I need to know what happened,” she told WTVD’s Diane Wilson. “That could have killed us.”

But even as BMW owners and fire departments around the country have raised concerns about these alarming incidents, several BMW owners — including car club member Macko – told ABC News that BMW gave them the cold shoulder after the fire.

“You’re at wit’s end, you don’t know what to do,” Macko said. “I feel like I’m just tossed aside. You know, it’s just a number. And so, it’s disheartening, I guess, when you’re so loyal to a particular product or brand or whatever and then you’re treated like this. Not even an apology.”

BMW says it has nothing to apologize for. In a written statement, BMW said that with almost five million BMW vehicles on U.S. roads, such fire incidents are rare, and based on its investigation, “we have not seen any pattern related to quality or component failure. Vehicle fires can result from a wide variety of external reasons unrelated to product defect.”

A spokesperson suggested several other potential causes of car fires other than a manufacturing defect, including a lack of maintenance, improper maintenance by unauthorized mechanics, aftermarket modifications, rodent nesting and even arson.

According to auto safety expert Sean Kane, the founder and president of Safety Research & Strategies, the risk of car fires is not an uncommon problem, but they usually occur in cars that are in operation. The mystery of car fires that start after the engine has been turned off, Kane says, may stem from the fact that modern vehicles are never fully powered down.

“A lot of the power to these electronic systems is going to remain on in the vehicle even when the vehicle’s off,” Kane told ABC News. “And once the electrical system starts going, you’ve got plenty of combustibles under the hood.”

ABC News turned over its findings to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the federal agency charged with enforcing vehicle performance standards. While the agency has not found evidence of a safety defect, they issued a statement directing drivers to their website to “report potential safety issues to the agency, including strange and unexplainable incidents involving their vehicles.”

In South Korea, however, the government is taking action. Korean safety officials launched an investigation after a series of car fires involving BMWs — some parked, some not – attracted sustained media attention.

Koh Sungwoo, deputy director of the South Korean transport ministry, told ABC News that BMW initially suggested that one of the causes of the fires may have been poor maintenance by unauthorized dealers before acknowledging a fuel line defect affecting some diesel cars. The company issued a recall covering those cars, but the government investigation is still ongoing. Koh said that while poor maintenance and defective fuel lines may explain some of the fires, they do not explain all of them.

“We don’t know the exact cause yet. We are still investigating,” Koh said. “We have to investigate those incidents because it’s very dangerous to the people in Korea.”

Joseph Santoli, a New Jersey-based attorney who has sued BMW in the past, believes “it’s a pattern that BMW is uniquely qualified to remedy,” but so far, Santoli told ABC News’ Brian Ross, “they have not.” Several angry BMW owners, Santoli said, have contacted him to explore their legal options.

“I have heard from owners that when they confront BMW about their incident, they’re told that this is the first time that BMW has ever heard of it,” Santoli told ABC News. “I think some of it is an example of BMW burying their heads in the sand.”

BMW has offered a discount on a replacement vehicle to some owners; in other cases, the company has paid cash settlements, in which case the company has insisted vehicle owners also sign a non-disclosure agreement.

The company says those “goodwill offers” are just “good business to provide support to our loyal customers.” BMW insists non-disclosure clauses are executed “to ensure that each incident is evaluated and then appropriately resolved on its own merits,” but Santoli believes the true intention of the arrangements is to ensure that the public is less likely to hear about a potential problem.

“That’s clearly what they’re intending to do,” Santoli said. “They’re intending to prevent anyone from sharing notes or comparing, or the media finding out.”

Bill Macko, meanwhile, still isn’t sure when he might be able to return home. He and his wife have been staying with relatives while the rebuilding process inches along at what feels to him like a glacial pace.

“I’d like to sleep in my own bed,” Macko said in March. “We’re working on 15 months, so it would be nice.”

Asked if he would ever feel safe enough to park his car in his garage again, Macko said he would.

“I’ll park my vehicles in there,” he said, “but it’ll never be a BMW. That won’t happen. No. Not at all.”
