It’s topped with gluten-free granola, and the whole dish is low in sodium, rich in protein, fiber, healthy carbs and fats. The ingredients are known to help lower blood pressure, regulate digestion, relieve inflammation, hydrate, and of course are enough to make anyone feel magical as they walk the streets of San Francisco, San Diego or Laguna Beach, Calif.

7 Things You Didn’t Know About the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

Los Angeles is adding to its world-class collection of museums with the announcement that the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art has selected Exposition Park in Downtown L.A. as its future home.

When it opens in 2020, the $1-billion museum is expected to be “one of the most imaginative and inclusive art museums in the world—a global destination that all Angelenos and Californians will be proud to call their own.”

Read on for seven things you didn’t know about the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

1. IT’S MUCH MORE THAN “STAR WARS”

Millennium Falcon from Star Wars

Of course, there will be a treasure trove of Star Wars memorabilia at the museum. But there’s much more to the Lucas Museum than just one blockbuster film franchise. George Lucas’ passion for collecting narrative art – art that tells a story through imagery – is the foundation for a collection that will grow for decades to come. Categorized by The History of Narrative Art, The Art of Cinema and Digital Art, the works on display will range from paintings by Degas, Renoir and Norman Rockwell to digital fine art, comic art and movie props like the iconic Millennium Falcon from Episode IV: A New Hope.

2. YOU CAN WATCH A MOVIE EVERY DAY

Boasting state-of-the-art cinematic theaters, the Lucas Museum will host daily screenings, both individual movies and as part of film series. Student films will also be shown. To enhance the experience, the museum will host pre-screening speaker talks, film study workshops, and related lectures and panels.

Other museum amenities include a fine dining restaurant, a 4,200 square-foot drop-in library, event spaces, and several acres of added green space.

3. IT’S A GIANT CLASSROOM

Surrounded by more than 100 elementary and high schools, and located near Lucas’ alma mater, USC, the Lucas Museum will make education a high priority. From museum visitors to students, teachers and aspiring artists, everyone is invited to learn how great stories are created and why they matter. The museum will feature public lectures and classes for all ages, hands-on workshops, after-school programs and camps, and a wide variety of additional educational opportunities.

4. YOU CAN GO METRO TO THE MUSEUM

The Lucas Museum will be built on the site of what is currently Lots 2 and 3 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The museum’s location off Vermont Avenue, just south of Exposition Boulevard, is a short walk from the Expo/Vermont Station of the Metro Expo Line.

5. IT’S LOCATED IN THE SOUTH L.A. PROMISE ZONE

In June 2016, South Los Angeles was awarded Promise Zone designation, bringing greater access to federal grants and other resources. The South Los Angeles Promise Zone is home to nearly 200,000 people and includes the neighborhoods of Vernon-Central, South Park, Florence, Exposition Park, Vermont Square, Leimert Park, and Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw. L.A. is the only city in the country with two Promise Zone designations within its boundaries.

6. THE MUSEUM IS A GIFT TO L.A.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is a gift to the City of Los Angeles from the Lucas family. The museum’s construction, collection and endowment will be fully funded by George Lucas and his family.

7. IT WILL HAVE AN ECONOMIC IMPACT

The museum is estimated to generate more than 1,500 construction jobs and will create over 350 permanent jobs when it opens in 2020.

Dr. Terry Horton Testifies before U.S. Senate on Opioid Epidemic

National Addiction Medicine Expert Shares Insights on Synthetic Opiates (WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 25) The chief of Addiction Medicine at Christiana Care Health System testified Thursday before the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on Capitol Hill about the scourge of opioid addiction.

Speaking at a hearing on the nation’s synthetic opioid epidemic, Terry Horton, M.D., FACP, FASAM – one of the foremost experts on addiction medicine – warned members of Congress that the opioid epidemic “is critical, urgent, and getting worse.”

Dr. Horton also noted, however, that when clinicians “provide specialized addiction treatment we can reduce drug overdose deaths.”

“When we can lengthen a patient’s time in treatment, we know we will get better outcomes,” Dr. Horton said. “When we combine medication-assisted treatment and therapy, we can win this battle that is being fought by nearly every family in our country.”

Most prescription pain relief medications exist as synthesized versions of natural opiate drugs, such as opium, morphine and heroin. These drugs are powerful painkillers and have become some of the most commonly abused in the nation, with an estimated 2.1 million Americans suffering from substance use disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers, according to the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Titled “Stopping the Shipment of Synthetic Opioids: Oversight of U.S. Strategy to Combat Illicit Drugs”, the hearing was organized by the Committee’s chief investigative subcommittee, which studies the efficiency and economy of operations related to all branches of the government.

The hearing comes as the U.S. Senate prepares to vote on the overhaul of the federal health law that opened the door to health insurance for millions of Americans and underpinned the opportunity for people with addictions to access evidence-based treatments. The American

Health Care Act – the bill to repeal the existing law – would reduce the number of Americans with health insurance by 24 million, the Congressional Budget Office announced Wednesday.

The bill caps federal funding to states for their Medicaid program and scales back tax credits that help some people pay for private health insurance.

“The opioid epidemic has touched nearly every family in our community in some way, and it is getting worse,” said Bettina Tweardy Riveros, Christiana Care’s chief health equity officer and the senior vice president of government affairs and community engagement. “The proposed cuts to Medicaid would devastate the long-term effective treatments that are saving lives by preventing more overdose deaths every day.”

Dr. Horton shared overwhelming data that supports the fact that long-term treatment – including the use of medication-assisted therapies – can help people break the cycle of opioid addiction.

“We know how to treat this epidemic,” Dr. Horton said. “We are learning what works…That means we have hope, but only if our policy decisions continue to support evidence-based treatment.”

Throughout his career, Dr. Horton has developed initiatives to treat addiction that have been adopted nationally. Most notable is the early-intervention substance abuse program at Christiana Care known as Project Engage. Through this program, health care professionals known as engagement specialists, who are peers in recovery, reach patients with substance abuse problems at their hospital bedside. By reaching those patients while they are at the low point of their addiction, the engagement specialists have a greater chance of successfully linking those patients to resources in the community that put them on the path to recovery. Project Engage also has been highlighted by the American Society of Addiction Medicine as a national model.

At Christiana Care, Dr. Horton also developed and launched the Opioid Withdrawal Pathway, an innovative effort to screen, identify and treat opioid-addicted patients who are admitted into the hospital that improves the quality and safety of their care, improves their patient experience, and reduces their cost of care.

“Today’s opioid crisis is arguably the worst in American history, and Delaware has not been immune to this heartbreaking epidemic,” said U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs’ Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. “Dr. Terry Horton spoke to the seriousness of this epidemic in Delaware, where over the past three years, hundreds of families have suffered the loss of their loved ones to fatal overdoses, and many more have witnessed someone they love struggle with addiction or substance abuse. We know that opioid addiction is a complex problem, but we also know that fatal overdoses are preventable. It’s absolutely imperative that Congress provides not just law enforcement, but also our health care providers with the tools and funding resources they need to save lives and help people recover from this deadly disease.” You can watch Dr. Horton’s testimony at 2:26:40 of the C-Span video “Stopping Flow of Synthetic Drugs.”

Rolls-Royce Wraith Black Badge 2017

Story by Vaughn Lowery + Benjamin Reese

Photos by Tyren Redd [http://tyrenredd.com]

Ever think about what’s in a name? See the words “Rolls-Royce” and say history, opulence and royalty, but the actual question is what’s really underneath all of that? Begin thinking deeper about the fellowship known as Rolls-Royce Motorcars and immediately doors that open up in ultra majestic suicide fashion come to mind. An automobile with the presence of a large ship carrying a beautifully sculpted figure on its bonnet beholding the power of all greatness in its spirit. A striking piece of artwork crafted from nothing less than the finest and most precious materials known to mankind.

All of this in mind, every time Rolls-Royce Motorcars releases a new model we recognize it’s going to be a special one. The Wraith coupe was reintroduced in 2013 after being on suspension from its original first appearance back in 1938. Today, their latest of evolution of the Wraith has arrived in 2017 in the “Black Badge” edition. Still a Rolls in every sense of the word, simply think of the Black Badge as a garnished twist that leaves you with a darker and sportier essence.

The traditional V12 engine is up in power, bringing max output to 624 hp with 642 lb-ft of torque and is now officially their most powerful engine ever created. Zero to sixty mph comes in just 4.3 seconds, which the younger minded buyers Rolls Royce claims the Black Badge plans to attract will care about. The Black Badge is built to inspire sportiness and their 21-inch carbon alloy composite wheels, inspired from 1960’s exotic Italian supercars will compliment that feature. While a steel monocoque sit’s underneath it’s chassis, Rolls has reworked the rear end along this fast back coupe to provide it with the athleticism it suggests.

The inside is completely thrilling with a primary Mugello red interior, contrast stitching and a black starlight headliner reminiscent of the dark sky. Black Badge models come with technical fiber on the fascia, center console and armrest opposed to the wood veneer found on standard Wraiths. Nonetheless, every Rolls-Royce is made custom to order and buyers have the option of fitting any style cockpit they desire (hence part of the reason there’s no two identical Rolls in the world). A driver-focused heads up display also comes standard with the Black Badge while passengers are able to enjoy a Bespoke Audio 600-watt 16 speaker audio system. Exclusive and new for the Black Badge is a unique clock resting on the center console with the “infinity” symbol placed on the front face, indicative of its limitless attitude and personality.

The grand price of ownership for the Black Badge Wraith comes in at $416,000.105 USD as tested but in this category price is nothing but a figure. The young and the restless will daringly pay for the excitement this latest Rolls has to offer.

Rethinking exercise: Replace punishing workouts with movement that makes you happy

Rethinking exercise: Replace punishing workouts with movement that makes you happy
ANN ARBOR—Many women start fitness programs to lose weight, and when they don’t, they feel like failures and stop exercising.
And then, months or a year later, they do the same thing again—creating a vicious cycle that fails to consider what might be leading to short-term motivation, says Michelle Segar, director of the University of Michigan’s Sport, Health, and Activity Research and Policy Center.
In a new study funded internally by the National Cancer Institute, Segar and co-investigators analyzed what women say makes them feel happy and successful, and how their expectations and beliefs about exercise foster or undermine those things.
“A new understanding of what really motivates women might make an enormous difference in their ability to successfully incorporate physical activity into their daily routine—and have fun doing it,” said Segar, who is also a researcher at the U-M Institute for Research on Women and Gender.
The findings, which will appear in the journal BMC Public Health, show that both active and inactive women report the same ingredients for feeling happy and successful:
  • Connecting with and helping others be happy and successful.
  • Being relaxed and free of pressures during their leisure time.
  • Accomplishing goals of many sorts (from grocery shopping to career goals).
But the study also found that for inactive women, their beliefs and expectations about exercise actually thwarted the things that make them feel happy and successful:
  • They believe “valid” exercise must be intense, yet they want to feel relaxed during their leisure time.
  • They feel pressured to exercise for health or to lose weight, yet during their leisure time they want to be free of pressures.
  • Success comes from achieving goals, yet their expectations about how much, where and how they should be exercising means they can’t achieve these goals.
“The direct conflict between what these low-active women believe they should be doing when they exercise, and their desire to decompress and renew themselves during leisure time, demotivates them,” Segar said. “Their beliefs about what exercise should consist of and their past negative experiences about what it feels like actually prevents them from successfully adopting and sustaining physically active lives.”
Segar and co-investigators Jennifer Taber, Heather Patrick, Chan Thai and April Oh conducted eight focus groups among white, black and Hispanic women aged 22-49 who were either categorized as “high active” or “low active.”
While the findings about happiness and success seemed to hold true for both groups in the different demographics, low-active women held distinctly different views than high-active women about exercising.
“We’ve all been socialized to exercise and be physically active for the last 30 years,” said Segar. “The traditional recommendation we’ve learned to believe is that we should exercise at a high intensity for at least 30 minutes, for the purpose of losing weight or improving our health. Even though there are newer recommendations that permit lower intensity activity in shorter durations most people don’t know or even believe it.”
This more traditional message has worked for a small minority of the population, but more generally it has failed to increase population physical activity, she says.
“This traditional approach to exercising might actually harm exercise motivation. Our study shows that this exercise message conflicts with and undermines the very experiences and goals most women have for themselves,” she said.
The exceptions found in the study were among the more active participants, who held more flexible views of exercise. They expressed that it “was not the end of the world” if they had to skip exercising once in awhile. They made exercise more of a “middle priority,” which took the pressure off and left room for compromise when schedules and responsibilities did not permit planned exercise to occur.
The high-active women seemed to have more positive feelings from exercising, in contrast to most of the low-active women, who, in general, tended to dread the very idea of it.
“There are important implications from this study on how we can help women better prioritize exercise in their day-to-day life,” Segar said. “We need to re-educate women they can move in ways that will renew instead of exhaust them, and more effectively get the message across that any movement is better than nothing. To increase motivation to be physically active, we need to help women to want to exercise instead of feeling like they should do it.”
This can be achieved by:
  • Re-educating women that movement can and should feel good to do.
  • Promoting physical activity as a way to connect with important others.
  • Reframing physical activity as a vehicle that helps women renew and re-energize themselves to better succeed at their daily roles and goals.
  • Explain physical activity as a broad continuum that counts all movement as valid and worth doing.

Emmy-Winning Reality Show Features Self-Determination for People with Disabilities in Healthcare Choices

Watch #BornThisWay @AETV, Tuesday, May 23 evening at 10/9c
Join RespectAbility for a live Twitter chat during the east coast broadcast using #BornThisWayand #BTWchat
Rockville, Maryland – Fully one-in-five Americans has a disability, and in many cases, their rights and lives are needlessly put at risk. While some healthcare choices are easy to understand, others are highly complex. For thefirst time on reality television, the issue of how adults with intellectual, mental health or other disabilities make competent decisions that can literally be life changing, or life enabling, is being addressed.

Born This Way, which recently won an Emmy for being the best reality show on TV today, is not an ordinary reality show. It stars seven diverse young adults with Down syndrome as they deal with issues around employment, independent living, education and romance.

This Tuesday night, A&E’s Born This Way will cover the potentially life-saving issue of supported decision-making for medical care.
Supported decision-making is an emerging strategy to enable individuals with developmental and other disabilities to make their own choices. This is especially helpful in the health care setting where every person utilizes the expertise of his or her provider and other resources to make difficult health related decisions.

“RespectAbility applauds
Born This Way for its informed and sensitive coverage of how adults with disabilities can safely and successfully interact with the healthcare system,” said Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, president of RespectAbility, a nonprofit organization that fights stigmas and advances opportunities for people with disabilities. “It’s not every day that reality shows can save lives – but this episode absolutely can do that. It also demonstrates that every human being has the right to be treated with dignity.”

The issue is highlighted in the show (spoiler alert!) when Sean McElwee goes into the hospital for surgery.

“One of my most important jobs as being Sean’s mom is to help him weigh the choices that he has in gaining healthcare,” said Sandra McElwee, Sean’s mother and
author of three books on inclusion.

When asked to comment, Sean said, “I had a good experience.” In addition to being a cast member on Born This Way, Sean started a
new business selling t-shirts, mugs, hats and bags with his comedic comments on them. Less than five years ago, Sean was unintelligible, and today he celebrates his speech by immortalizing it on swag.

“Frequently our current healthcare system provides inadequate consideration for the needs of adults with developmental disabilities,” Mizrahi added. “But
Born This Way models how every adult with a developmental disability can have access to appropriate healthcare options.”
